Job Summary
This position is responsible for the accurate, precise and timely registering and processing of laboratory specimens from outside accounts or entities. Responsible for coordinating and processing all specimens. Processing specimens includes accurate registration of patient information, including demographics and insurance information, accurate ordering of tests, accurate labeling of tubes and specimens. Processing also may include the separation of serum, organization of all handling, sorting and organization of transport samples to the departments involved including samples being sent to other laboratories. Position relates to overall function of the laboratory and the hospital in view of patient care, so test results are not compromised. Acts as a laboratory liaison between all outreach accounts. Presents self and department in a professional manner at all times. Refers questions/problems to the appropriate Supervisor/Manager.
Experience
* Admitting and laboratory registration experience preferred.
* One year experience in a hospital environment preferred.
* Familiarity with and experience in obtaining and verifying insurance information preferred.
* Familiarity with ordering lab tests preferred.
* Experience processing specimens in a hospital setting preferred.
Education and Training
* Two years of college (secretarial/health related) or equivalent work experience.
* Medical terminology mandatory.
License, Certification & Registration
* N/A

* Proven typing ability (40 wpm) and computer skills.
* Knowledge of HIS/LIS preferred.
* Independent judgment and initiative required to schedule, organize, and plan work.
* Must possess and demonstrate strong organizational skills.
* Teach medical technology students how to process specimens and answer computer related questions.
* Responsible for care and accuracy in collection and labeling specimens.
* Flexibility and adaptability in emergency situations including working additional hours or shifts.
* Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and alertly for extended periods of time, and under stress, to ensure against errors.
* Above average manual dexterity.
* Effective communication skills, use of computer systems, listening, speaking, writing and reading.
