Job Description:
TEN MONTHS (200 DAYS), INCLUDING IN PART PAID STATE RETIREMENT & STATE MANDATED LIFE INSURANCE & IN PART FOR HEALTH INSURANCEGeneral Definition of Work: To help reduce or eliminate speech and language impairments that interfere with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the educationalprogram.Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:(The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement
  • Provide a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech, language and hearing-impaired children
  • Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments
  • Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language fluency impairments
  • Provide screening to identify speech handicapped children at regular intervals and at specified levels
  • Assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate
  • Provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities
  • Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate
  • Provide in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement
  • Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services
  • Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services
  • Compile case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate
  • Assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience: Holds an active, valid license in speech-language pathology issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech -Language Pathology (BASLP).
