Sports Camp DirectorJob Description Reports to: Executive Director Academy Camps is an overnight sports-specific sleepaway camp experience that takes place on the campuses Blair Academy (NJ) and Suffield Academy (CT). We are seeking a Camp Director to lead our camp leadership team and coaching staff. Who we are Academy Camps is a modern approach to the sports camp experience. We offer 1- and 2-week sessions for Boys & Girls aged 10 - 15 interested in baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, running, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, tennis & volleyball. Our campers choose one of our 13 Academy Sports and receive 2 intensive training sessions per day with our high-performance coaching staff. We are a dedicated team of high performance coaches, nurturing & exemplary counselors, and experienced camp professionals, passionate about the 'whole athlete'. Outside of sports specific training sessions, AC is distinguished in delivering programming focused on its pillars of Performance, Wellness, Mindset, and Leadership mixed in with a healthy dose of fun through a daily schedule of traditional sleepaway camp activities. Position The Camp Director leads the Academy Camps Leadership Team and all aspects of our overnight youth camp operation. They manage all campers and staff and serve as an escalation point for behavioral issues. The Camp Director is responsible for managing the Sports Directors, Medical Team, and Media Team. This role demands a combination of leadership and management skills and a capacity to promote a camp environment centered on our core values to deliver an overall rewarding camp experience for every camper and staff. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Camp Facing Leadership -Take full ownership of the overall leadership of the camp, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations, upholding the camp's core values, and promoting an inclusive, positive environment for both campers and staff. Camper & Staff Management - Work collaboratively with the Associate Director and Residential Life Director to manage camper and staff needs, ensuring a safe, supportive, and engaging camp experience. Serve as a key resource for resolving conflicts and addressing interpersonal or behavioral issues. Ensure Programmatic Integrity - Oversee the execution and quality of all camp programs to ensure they reflect the camp's pillars of Performance, Wellness, Mindset, and Leadership. Guarantee that activities are aligned with Academy Camps' mission and provide a well-rounded experience for all participants. Lead Full Leadership Team - Provide leadership and guidance to Associate Director, Residential Life Director, Program Director, and Sports Directors. Supporting them in executing high-quality, high-impact experiences including sport-specific training sessions and ensuring the proper delivery of each academy's curriculum. Oversee Camper Evaluations - Review and oversee the process of evaluating camper progress, ensuring that feedback is timely, constructive, and fosters growth in both sports and personal development. Manage Parent Communications - Work in partnership with the Residential Life Director to manage communication with parents, ensuring clarity, transparency, and a timely response to any questions or concerns that arise during the camp session. Manage Operational Team - In conjunction with the Associate Director, oversee the Medical Team, Media Team, Operations Assistants, and Admin Manager to ensure operating standards are met or exceeded. Staff Management Escalation Point - Serve as the first point of contact for escalated staff issues, providing guidance on handling complex situations and ensuring a cohesive and well-supported staff team throughout the camp session. Your Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree (or professional equivalent) + 7-10 years professional experience working in a role with well-aligned proficiencies
- Experience working in a sports environment as a coach or a summer camp environment is required
- Additional experience with leading and administering programs that reflect the camp's population is desirable
- Experience working with youth in sports or educational programs
- An excellent relationship builder - quick to connect, build trust, and rapport
- A goal-oriented coach - motivated to help our staff and athletes achieve their goals
- A creative problem-solver - with an empathetic approach to customer service, team management, and ability to ask for help when needed
- A growth mindset - an orientation towards learning and development; willing to receive and implement feedback and learn from mistakes
Expectations, Compensation, and Benefits
- Available and on-site for the dates of the full summer session including staff pre-season training and post-camp: June 13 - August 3
- Available starting May 1 to periodically (5-10 hours/wk) support pre-camp Leadership Team activities covering the following areas: Onboarding, Pre-Camp Welcome Calls, Leadership Team Management, and Pre-Season Training Development.
- The AC compensation package is competitive and is commensurate with skills and experience. Compensation is $13,000 - 15,000 and includes room and board. Travel stipend provided to support relocation.
