SUMMARY

The position of Sports Information Director should be an integral part of the Department of Athletics. The timely release of information can play a large role in the excitement created by upcoming events or accomplishments by the teams and individuals of South Plains College.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The information in the media and on the web page should be accurate, up to date, thorough and user friendly. For this to happen, the SIC must work closely and continually with the coaches of all sports, as well as the Director of Athletics. This position needs to be very informative and changing to meet the needs of the school, the programs and the media, the position should include the duties as listed. However this should never exclude ideas or activities that may further the ideals of the Department of Athletics.

Pre-Season

* Accumulate athletic information for coaches

* Set up photo assignments (team & individual)

* Write bios for all athletes, managers, trainers and coaches

* Work with AD on all upcoming promos and events for schedules, posters, tickets and t-shirts

* Contact news agencies (radio, television, newspapers) for promos, appearances, previews, etc for upcoming season

* Be responsible for the all-sports brochures (must be finished by the first event of that sport)

* Have all information and photos on web-site as they become available

* Work with coaches and AD to maintain a high level, up to date web site

* Set up links to athlete's home town media and use this during the season to disseminate information to those outlets

During Season

* Maintain accurate and up to date statistics for all sports

* Relay news stories to all media outlets the day of competition or as soon as possible

* Travel with teams (Conference and post season only)

* Maintain web site as ever changing and up to date

* Keep sports stories accurate with post event interviews with all coaches

* Provide lead-in stories to all media outlets for upcoming events (Promo pictures, etc)

* During home basketball games, be responsible for any special game literature (brochures, signs or stuffers) actual game stats for media, coaches, announcer, etc, and oversee operation of message center. The same would apply to any events hosted by track or rodeo)

* Compile post game information and stories for all media outlets

* Work with conference and national web sites for accurate and up to date statistical data

Post Season

* Update all records and archives and transfer information to the web pages (This should include school records, All Americans, National Championships and Olympians, coaches records, and Hall of Fame)

* Maintain correct events section for all media and web concerning transfers or signings of South Plains College athletes to four year institutions

* Disseminate to all media outlets honors or special accomplishments by WJCAC teams or individuals (All conference, All region, All Americans, Olympians, etc)

* Disseminate to all media outlets honors or special accomplishments by coaches and staff

* or college personnel

Ongoing

* Continually search for outlets to advance the Department of Athletics

* Create/design content and/or graphics for all sports

* Work closely with local media outlets to build support

* Work with National Office to enhance Region V, WJCAC, and South Plains College information on the national web

* Expand web site for all related operations i.e. Texan Club, etc.

* To work closely with UIL officials to enhance the activities hosted by the college

* Performs all other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary and appropriate by the Athletic Director and/or the President of the College

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A.), in an appropriate field, from four-year College or university. Master's Degree preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts consistent with budget preparation.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
