Our client is a non-profit organization that for over a century has been at the forefront of biotech and life sciences research, driving discoveries that change the world. They're currently hiring a Senior Grant Accountant that has strong knowledge of federal and non-federal grants. The ideal candidate will be strong in Excel, understand how to prepare complex Journal Entries, and have GAAP experience. This position is located in the La Jolla area and will require an on-site presence with a starting pay of $75k.Position SummaryThe Grants Accountant, Senior will have a strong financial accounting background and will be a vital part in ensuring both the tactical management and stewardship of externally funded grants (federal and non-federal). Their commitment to excellence and innovation has made them a leader in the field, and they are looking for a talented Senior Grant Accountant to help us continue their mission.Responsibilities
  • Oversee accurate and timely financial reporting for grant activities and organizational finances.
  • Prepare complex journal entries, reconciliations, audit schedules, and financial statements.
  • Oversee processing of accounting documents, including invoices and purchase orders.
  • Lead special projects such as budget projections, management analyses, and system implementations.
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), and institutional policies.
  • Identify and mitigate financial, administrative, and compliance risks.
  • Assess, design, implement, and monitor accounting systems and processes.
  • Maintain and improve controls to ensure visibility, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Conduct complex financial analyses and prepare technical memos on new accounting pronouncements.
  • Review and interpret historical accounting data and financial documents for accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide backup support for critical operational roles as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field OR 3+ years of related work experience with grants and/or program management in a biomedical research institute / early-stage biotech company.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with proven experience in cultivating cross-collaborative working relationships across an organization.
  • Understanding of federal grants, a strong plus.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities while effectively managing multiple commitments.
  • Strategic mindset coupled with the desire to constantly improve the status quo.
