PRIMARY FUNCTION : The Sr Laboratory Technician prepares incoming samples and performs biological/ serological analyses on incoming samples for assorted bacteria and microbial populations, records results, and communicates findings to various internal departments (e.g. microbiology, serology, wastewater) through reports. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS : Receive incoming samples and input into appropriate databases (e.g. LIMS) and communicate with processing plants on receipt of the sample, information, or other items by the laboratory Perform sample biochemical analyses, including prepping samples using aseptic techniques, to identify and determine if microbial or serological bacteria populations are present such as Salmonella or Listeria; report findings to appropriate personnel Perform sample analysis on waste water samples to determine if sample exceeds permit limit; communicate findings to appropriate waste water operators and/ or complex leadership Perform biological analysis (i.e. biochemical or chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, etc.) per Dept of Environmental Quality permit criteria Perform serological analyses to determine if vaccination program is effective for avian pathogens/ diseases (e.g. Reo Virus, New Castle disease, Infectious bronchitis, Anemia, infectious bursal disease, etc.); report findings to appropriate personnel Perform routine maintenance, calibration checks, and minor troubleshooting of all laboratory equipment; communicate any issue unable to be resolved to appropriate personnel and/ or vendor Create and maintain a poultry serum bank for in and out of state breeder, broiler and pullet farms Conduct sanitation checks both in and out of state hatcheries and processing plants Participate in internal and 3rd party audits as needed Identify areas for improvement, develop process, communicating to Laboratory manager Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when mandatory, supporting a zero-accident environment Perform additional relevant duties as assigned SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES : None. This is an individual contributor role with required competencies: Functional/Technical Skills, Action Oriented, Problem Solving, Learning on the Fly, and Interpersonal Savvy EDUCATION and CERTIFICATIONS : Bachelors' degree Poultry Science, biochemistry or other related scientific discipline o Combination of education and prior laboratory experience may be substituted for four-year degree EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS : Minimum two (2) years laboratory experience Strong knowledge of laboratory functions, processes and procedures Experience in and understanding of working metric weight and volume measurements Good computer and math skills including Microsoft Office Suite, internal software programs with ability to accurately input required data Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate scientific data and/ or statistics into an easily understood report Strong customer focus with exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to fluently communicate effectively both up and down the chain of command and with external customers in a timely and professional manner Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail Must possess a strong customer-centric attitude, high energy level and a strong sense of urgency SAFETY REQUIREMENTS : Follow departmental and company safety policies and programs Wear required protective equipment in all areas where mandatory PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Ability to work non-standard shift (Holiday, weekend, and/or extended) when needed Some travel required We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
