Job Description Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is seeking a Sr. Patent Agent I to join our Instruments Practice Group in Pittsburgh, PA or Morrisville, NC. In this role, you will be part of our world-class Intellectual Property Department, supporting the development of our Life Sciences patent portfolio. Key Responsibilities - Collaborate with patent counsel, paralegals, and R&D teams to prepare and prosecute high-quality, commercially relevant patent applications.
- Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate searches, and counsel R&D and business colleagues.
- Review publications and marketing materials as part of the Company's Promotional Review process.
- Engage in trade secret sensing and auditing activities.
Qualifications - Registered to practice before the USPTO with at least 5 years of experience drafting and prosecuting high-value patents with a track record of success. Excellent knowledge of USPTO procedures is required.
- Advanced degree in a field related to instrumentation and associated workflows for medical, genetic, proteomic, or molecular or cellular biology technologies is preferred. Degrees in chemical or biomedical engineering are preferred, but degrees in other engineering and physics fields will be considered. Minimum of Bachelors required.
- Proven ability to perform complex IP analyses, including product clearances and prior art searches. Familiarity with patent searching databases is desired.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver engaging IP trainings to R&D and business colleagues.
- A high level of initiative and the ability to work autonomously, consistently exceeding expectations and seeking process improvements.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with a team-oriented approach and comfort working in dynamic, diverse multi-national teams.
- Effective communicator across teams, functions, and global regions. Able to clearly convey concepts in an engaging manner.
- A strong sense of ethics and integrity.
