Role Description
This is a Full-time, on-site role located in Wauwatosa, WI. As a Sr. Power (Electronic) Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for integrating electric vehicle charging infrastructure with the grid and other energy systems. You will work collaboratively with a team of engineers and designers, share knowledge, and contribute to improving existing products and developing new products.
Your Impact:
- Lead the development and integration of advanced DERs power electronics systems, focusing on inverter-based resources (IBRs), especially for grid-tie high-power DC fast charging EV systems, energy storage systems (ESS), and solar PV systems.
- Work with customers and the business development team to create power system simulation models to represent our company's power product systems in dynamic modeling software and real-time simulation tools, and perform power system grid impact studies.
- Investigate the value of EV smart-charging load management to reduce the impacts of transportation electrification. Develop the communication and coordination between EV charging infrastructure and the power grid to optimize charging times.
- Collaborate with the firmware team to translate and integrate power control algorithms into the firmware framework.
- Spearhead research and innovation by bringing prototypes into grid-compliant and system-reliable products, or bringing ideas/concepts into government/company-funded projects.
Technical Skills and Experience:
- Deep and extensive knowledge of grid-code compliance studies related to UL1741, IEEE 1547/2800, UK grid code, IEC, and NEC, including reactive capability and compensation, stability assessment, power factor and power quality, harmonic distortion study, fault analysis, short circuit analysis, dynamics and EMT transient analysis, and load/power flow.
- Extensive experience in power system simulation tools: PSCAD, PowerFactory, PowerFactory DigSILENT, and other additional tools: PSS/E, PSLF, and PowerWorld.
- Extensive experience in real-time simulation HIL tools (Typhoon, OPAL-RT, RTDS, etc) with testing systems setting up including physical and software setups of meters, controllers, network switches, power supplies, oscilloscopes, and interface cards.
- Experience in firmware programming languages: C, C++, MATLAB, Python, Fortran, etc..
- Experience in communication protocols: Modbus/CAN/Ethernet/OCPP/IEC 61850/DNP3/MQTT.
- Relevant knowledge of power system analysis and interconnection study: load flow analysis, overcurrent, and protective device coordination, steady-state thermal and voltage analysis, arc-flash hazard Analysis, motor starting analysis, harmonic analysis, transient analysis, short circuit, equipment evaluation, reactive power study, underground ampacity thermal calculations, grounding studies.
- Knowledge of power systems optimization (economic dispatch, unit commitment, demand response, AC/DC optimal power flow, and electric market) and related data science knowledge is a plus.
- Project management: proven track record of leading projects from conception to production, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and a detail-oriented approach.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field. Master's and PhD degrees are preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience designing and developing power systems, focusing on low/medium voltage grid-tied IBRs is desired. Direct experience with North American ISOs or utility companies is a plus. Experience in network or transient studies for inverter-based EV charging systems/renewable energy systems/HVDC/FACTS/ in industrial and utility grid interconnects.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with experience coaching and mentoring junior engineers.
