As the Sr. Reinsurance Accountant, you are responsible for the accounting and reporting of various tasks with respect to outside reinsurers, reinsurance brokers and related parties for The Mutual Group and its Member institutions. In this position you will serve as the point person for reinsurance accounting questions and work closely with individuals in the Reinsurance and Finance space, and speak to all reinsurance accounting results to senior leadership. You will ensure that the general ledger reflects all accounting transactions and prepares timely reconciliations. Work Arrangements: Travel to the home office in West Des Moines, Iowa may be required on a quarterly basis based on business need, including overnight stays.Accountabilities:
- Responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements and analysis, including an in-depth understanding of the inter- company pooling agreement and how it operates. Ability to determine the appropriate level of premiums, losses and commissions to be ceded each month under the Company's reinsurance contracts and authorize appropriate journal entries for such transactions.
- Responsible for the preparation of statutory quarterly and annual statements along with supplemental filings (IEE's, Combined Annual Statement).
- Responsible for the preparation of statutory audit reports and assists independent auditors as needed.
- Keeps abreast of current developments in the accounting and insurance industry. Researches technical accounting issues and documents recommendations in white paper format.
- Other duties assigned by Manager or VP of Finance.
Skills & Requirements Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
- Four to six years of work experience in insurance accounting.
- Excellent working knowledge of property and casualty reinsurance.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Microsoft suite knowledge including strong Excel skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to convey clear, concise information to others, using verbal or other appropriate communication techniques.
- Ability to compose written correspondence and factual reports which are well-organized and concise.
- Ability to take independent actions.
- Ability to problem solve.
- CPA certification desired; MBA is a plus.
- Experience using SQL is a plus.
- Experience using Workday is a plus.
Compensation:
- $80,100 - $133,500 commensurate with experience, plus bonus eligibility
- $88,200 - $147,000 commensurate with experience in CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, and PA, plus bonus eligibility
