Job DetailsJob LocationWilson College - Chambersburg, PAPosition TypeFull TimeWilson College is currently seeking an energetic individual to join our barn staff as a Stables Assistant at the Penn Hall Equestrian Center. The Stables Assistant plays an essential role in providing for the physical care of up to 72 Wilson and privately owned horses. They also ensure the maintenance of the Equestrian Center in a manner consistent with a professional equine facility, all while fostering a positive learning environment.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Participate in the daily maintenance and health care of the horses, and facility maintenance.
  • Mentor and train staff and students in the daily care, health care and facility maintenance.
  • Operate tractor and dump trailers safely and correctly even in adverse weather conditions.
  • Perform arena and other maintenance including but not limited to fence repair and pasture construction.
  • Use good judgement in keeping staff and horses safe and the facility running in an efficient and professional manner. Display professionalism even in difficult circumstances, such as euthanasia, emergencies, dealing with the public/staff/students.
  • Assess injuries and illnesses and carry out the directives of the Center Coordinator, Assistant Center Coordinator or Veterinarian.
  • Perform admissions tours for prospective boarders and students.
  • Help with identifying, trying and acquiring horses for purchase or donation.
  • Assist with summer camps, horse shows, open houses, and all other ancillary programs.
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week, non-exempt with occasional overtime required
  • Regular work hours may include day, evening, weekends, rotating holidays, call duty and emergency care hours
  • Some set shifts, some flexible shifts, based on the needs of the College
  • Considered Essential Personnel when the College is closed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Equestrian Center; Outdoors, Year-round weather conditions, including inclement weather.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must be able to use farm equipment and attachments, have knowledge of hand held and power tools; have knowledge of safety practices, precautions and occupational hazards associated with farm work
  • Must be able to spend prolonged periods of time working outdoors and in a farm environment
  • Able to reach, lift and carry at least 50 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
  • Fitness and coordination must allow applicant to walk, bend, lift and stand for several hours daily; as well as safely control horses of all sizes, ages, and behavior types.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or GED required, Bachelor's Degree in Equine Studies, Animal Studies, Agriculture, or related field preferred
  • Unrestricted drivers license, and ability to attain and maintain approved driver status for the College
  • Excellent horsemanship/livestock skills and minimum one-year professional experience working with horses preferred
