Job Summary
Performs a variety of basic duties as a sworn peace officer related to the protection of life and property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, prevention of crime, preservation of the public peace, apprehension of suspected law violators, and the rendering of aid or service. Provides basic police services in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the East Georgia State College Police Department.
Responsibilities
Patrol
* Engages in pro-active law enforcement patrol functions on foot and in vehicles to detect and deter crime, protect life and property, preserve order, and offer service or aid.
Call Response
* Responds to, addresses, and documents alarm calls, medical emergencies/injuries, crisis situations, motor vehicle crashes, calls for service or mutual aid assistance, complaints, lost/recovered property, reports of damage, public nuisance, criminal activity, suspicious circumstances, or hazardous/unsafe conditions.
* Performs rescue functions in accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including neutralizing threats, directing traffic, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and removing people from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from areas.
Investigation / Enforcement
* Conducts initial and follow-up investigations into criminal, non-criminal, and traffic-related violations by gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and filing written reports.
* Enforces state law / local ordinances through the exercise of independent judgment in determining reasonable suspicion to detain, probable cause to search and/or arrest, and determining when force may be used and to what degree.
* Enforces East Georgia State College policies and regulations through administrative referral as required.
Training
* Fulfills annual professional development/training requirements as prescribed by the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council, East Georgia State College, and the Department.
Community Relations
* Promotes positive campus community relations through engagement and active involvement in campus events.
Other Duties as Assigned
* Assumes other duties as may be assigned by the Police Sergeant or Chief of Police / Director of Public Safety.
Required Qualifications
* High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
* Must possess a valid Georgia driver's license at the time of appointment.
* Must possess and maintain certification as a basic peace officer in good standing pursuant to the rules of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.
* Sufficient experience in understanding the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position.
* Be eligible to occupy a position of trust as determined through a comprehensive background check, pursuant to the regulations of East Georgia State College and the Board of Regents. Requirements will include, at a minimum, an oral interview, a background investigation, a state and federal fingerprint/biometric-based criminal history check, a nationwide sex offender search, a social security number check, a credit history check, a medical examination, a drug screening, a psychological screening, an employment history check, and the verification of at least three professional/personal references.

* Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence.
* Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures.
* Knowledge of English grammar, composition, usage and punctuation.
* Skilled in operating police vehicles, firearms, emergency equipment, and other standard and specialized law enforcement equipment.
* Ability to perform first aid in the event of accident, illness, injury, and use of force situations, to include CPR and the use of an AED.
* Ability to use police records management systems, job-related information databases, and basic software applications (i.e., Microsoft Office, etc.).
* Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation and to deal firmly and courteously with the public under stressful conditions.
* Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action on own initiative.
* Ability to speak and write to make complete, accurate, and coherent reports.
* Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
* Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member.
* Ability to develop and maintain positive police-community relations.
* Ability to speak about crime prevention, awareness, and education to a variety of campus audiences.
* Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
* Ability to perform rescue and evacuation functions during accidents, emergencies, and disasters, to include traffic control and direction, removing persons from dangerous situations, and facilitating the evacuation of campus facilities.
* Ability to use radio systems to dispatch and receive calls for service.
* Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, including for the purposes of emergency response.
* Ability to walk, run, jump, navigate a variety of terrains, and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
* Ability to perform arrests forcibly, if necessary and reasonably, requiring proficiency in the use of handcuffs, other physical restraints, defensive tactics, less lethal and intermediate weapons, and firearms.
* Ability to handle situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, with respect for the rights of others.
* Ability to become familiar with College policies in the public safety area.
* Ability to become familiar with the campus and surrounding geographic area.
* Ability to become familiar with the Jeanne Clery Act, VAWA, Title IX, and its application to campus law enforcement.
