Work Shifts 7:30 P.M - 8:00 A.M Job Description Purpose: To provide intensive nursing care to critically ill and unstable patients; such care includes ongoing monitoring of vital functions, assessing significant changes and initiating appropriate interventions. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: The Staff Nurse (RN) of SICU is charged with and responsible for: •Assess and monitors patients conditions and initiates appropriate nursing intervention including direct patient care. •Provides nursing assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, intervention and evaluation. •Provision of life support for patients who are compromised hemodynamically and/or respiratory impaired. •Monitoring of invasive lines (Arterial lines, Swan-Ganz) to provide data for hemodynamic stabilization. •Evaluation of cardiac rhythms and administration of drips according to protocols. •Utilization of protocol in weaning and extubation of patients. •Performance of peritoneal dialysis as ordered. •Maintenance of intracranial pressure monitoring. •Titration of medications according to protocols. •Defibrillation of patients as necessary; assistance in cardioversion when indicated. •Provision of care for patients with balloon pump/MAST trousers/pneumatic stockings, Sengstaken-Blakemore Tube. •Initiation of patient/family education and psychosocial support to family/significant other. •Performance of the duties described in the generic Staff Nurse job description. •Maintain clinical competency through participation in education, attendance at mandatory classes, BLS, ACLS and PALS Renewal and knowledge of current Critical Care standards. •Participates in performance improvement, TJC, and infection control activities. •Provide age appropriate care to newborn, infant, toddler, pre-schooler, school-age, adolescent, young, middle age, and geriatric patients within the units. Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and 2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Special Note: For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Department Preferences 1.
