RN works as a member of the multidisciplinary team utilizing a holistic approach in the provision of care, support of patients and attainment of optimal levels of health through health teachings and counseling.Specific Duties And Responsibilities
- Maintains compliance with National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG): patient identification, communication, medication management, infection control i.e. hand hygiene, etc.
- Assesses and monitors patient's condition and initiates appropriate nursing intervention including direct patient care.
- Plans and evaluates the delivery of nursing care utilizing the nursing process; formulates and implements a plan of care based on identified needs; sets priorities and delivers or directs care to meet patient needs.
- Collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary team in the care of assigned patients, including patient and significant others in teaching and discharge planning.
- Assists with diagnostic test/procedures and administer medications according to policy; evaluates patient responses and make appropriate revisions in the patient's plan of care, e.g., Bone Marrow aspiration/biopsy.
- Recognizes emergency situations including adverse reaction to blood transfusion, chemotherapy agents, antibiotics, etc., and responds effectively according to protocols
- Assumes personal responsibility for safe work habits and patient safety; including the safe handling and management of chemotherapeutic agents
- Maintains professional competence and knowledge by attending seminars or workshops focused on the treatment and management of the hematology/oncology client
- Maintains competency in the evaluation and management of midline and peripheral access lines for administration of chemotherapy.
- Reviews pertinent lab results prior to the initiation of chemotherapy
- Administers chemotherapy agents (subcutaneous, oral, IV), as ordered maintaining safety precautions.
- Follows protocol for chemotherapy spill.
- Participates in the accreditation process and maintain a state of readiness for patients and regulatory bodies
- Participates in performance improvement and discharge planning activities.
- Utilizes ICARE in the adherence to customer service standards with internal and external customers
- Maintains patient rights by ensuring the use of translator services for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients.
- Performs unit management activities in absence of Head Nurse or as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Special NoteFor assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).Department Preferences
