Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe Staff Nurse in the Behavioral Health Department has skills and competence in Nursing and works within the scope of regulatory agency standards and policies and procedures as set forward by HHC and Harlem Hospital.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs nursing skills and interventions efficiently, safely, consistently and cost-effectively.
- Identifies and treats responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques, such as, case findings, health teaching, health counseling and the provision of care supportive to restorative life and well-being.
- Observes symptoms or changes in patient behavior, identifies and manages crisis situations promptly, initiates
- Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and knowledge of the impact of gender, race, ethnicity, asexual orientation, income, etc. on treatment goals and strategies of behavior change.
- Demonstrates respect for personal values and belief systems of individuals served.
- Demonstrates knowledge of standards of ethical behavior.
- Demonstrates initiates and completes initial and ongoing assessment of patients according to established guidelines.
- Assists with triage process of patients received from the Medical Emergency Room.
- Assist in the search process and securing patients property
- Demonstrates understanding of addiction, the disease process and addictive behaviors.
- Demonstrates knowledge of signs and symptoms of intoxication, dependency, withdrawal.
- Demonstrates knowledge of medical indicators and problems related to addiction
- Demonstrates knowledge of clinical techniques available to address secondary abuse issues
- on good clinical judgment.
- Demonstrates understanding of and ability to apply principles of group dynamics.•
- Observes, records and reports patient's response to treatment to appropriate members of the health care team.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of signs and symptoms of withdrawal and ability to monitor appropriately during detoxification.
- Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace which enhances the Mission, Vision and Value Statement of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem Hospital.
- Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to all customers

Minimum QualificationsA valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; andHolds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).Special Note:For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit.
