Department: Nursing

Reports to: Director of Nursing

Position: Staff RN

The purpose of the Staff RN position is to provide, plan, coordinate or manage nursing care,

nursing services and health education to nursing home residents. Must be in accordance with current

federal, state, and within the limits of licensure, local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern

the facility. RN Unit Managers are responsible to maintain the highest degree of quality care at all times.

Duties:

A) Know, follow, interpret, and direct all policies and procedures and communications as needed to

personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies, and other accrediting bodies such as the

NYS Department of Health and Human Services.

B) Maintain a good working rapport with personnel within the facility to ensure services can be

adequately maintained to meet the holistic need of the resident

C) Pass medications, provide treatment and do assessments to residents to assist with maintaining the quality of nursing

services rendered

D) Develop and implement the residents plan of care

E) Initiate investigations according to the policy

F) Monitor all documentation by the certified nurse aides as related the

residents plan of care

G) Direct the implementation of clinical initiatives

H) Place resident service first: ensure that residents and their families receive the highest quality of

service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals needs and

rights.

I) Supervisory responsibilities include.

1. Receive calls and find replacements for absent staff

2. Determine rotation of employees as needed and transfer employees among units as needed

3. Prepare performance evaluations of employees

4. Monitor and correct job performance of employees

5. Is in charge of facility in absence of higher ranking management officials

6. Use independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of

these duties

Clinical:

a. Perform nursing assessments regarding the health status of the resident

b. Perform skin assessments on new admissions, readmissions

c. Use a systematic approach regarding the health status of the resident

d. Select and institute nursing intervention that might be required to stabilize a residents

condition and/or prevent complications

e. Consult with physician or licensed independent practitioner as needed

f. Clarify orders or treatment regimen as needed

g. Understand the rationale for the effect of medications and treatments, and administer same

h. Report and document the residents symptoms, responses and status

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Has obtained R.N. and has a current unencumbered New

York State license. Long term care experience preferred.
