The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. The New Mexico State Library, established in 1929 and located in Santa Fe, provides direct rural library services through books by mail and bookmobiles, supplemental funding to public libraries, a research library, and has a Library for the Blind and Print Disabled. The Library Development Bureau provides consultant and programming support to over 100 public and tribal public libraries statewide. Why does the job exist?The State Data Coordinator (Librarian-Advanced) position resides in the Library Development Bureau at the New Mexico State Library located in Santa Fe. This position is responsible for overseeing New Mexico public and tribal public libraries' participation in the Public Libraries Survey (PLS). This includes coordinating with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to review and edit submitted data for final reporting. This position also completes the State Library Administrative Agency (SLAA) survey every other year.The State Data Coordinator also serves as a consultant to public libraries statewide, providing advice and assistance on all aspects of public library services according to recognized best practices and identified community needs. This position regularly communicates with libraries via telephone and email and conducts routine site visits to public libraries statewide. How does it get done?Communicates with public libraries regarding participation in the PLS for supplemental state funding eligibility. Organizes, tests, and evaluates the PLS data collection tool for usability. Educates and trains public library staff in the use of the data collection tool. Administers the annual PLS by communicating with library staff, collecting data, coordinating data submission, analyzing collected data, and preparing the data for final reporting to the IMLS. Oversees the State Grants-in-Aid program using New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC) and established routines and procedures. Conducts routine site visits to public and tribal public libraries and potential libraries seeking funding. Provides advice, outreach, and consultative services to public library staff on a broad range of library-related topics as well as leadership, soft-skills, community engagement, and community asset mapping. Participates in staff and organizational meetings and in outreach activities to build awareness of State Library services. Supports other projects, programs, and colleagues as assigned in the Development Bureau and the State Library. Collaborates with other bureaus within the State Library as needed and assigned. Other duties as assigned related to the position. Participates in professional organizations, including the New Mexico Library Association. Represents the New Mexico State Library in formal programs and presentations, as well as in written and oral communication at the national, state, and local levels. Who are the customers?This position supports public libraries and public library staff statewide to ensure eligibility for supplemental state funding and provides consultant support to enhance library services to New Mexicans statewide. Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate has at least three (3) years of experience in a public library setting; experience creating and word-smithing surveys; experience transforming data into statistics; experience working in Excel; experience using DocuSign; is organized with attention to detail; has excellent written and verbal communication skills; and public speaking and customer service experience. Minimum QualificationMaster's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country) with two (2) years experience in performing and providing advanced library technical operations, effective library and information services, plus cataloging experience and managerial experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office setting with extensive computer and phone usage, as well as frequent email communication. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required with occasional moving of materials weighing up to 40lbs.
