Primary Purpose of this Position:
The State Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator position is the lead Aquarium Division staff member at Pine Knoll Shores (NCAPKS) responsible for coordinating all aspects of marine mammal stranding response in our designated coverage area under the federal stranding agreement with NOAA. The position's purpose is to ensure that all marine mammal stranding response operations are effective, efficient, safe, and are performed cooperatively with all our partners. The position works with Aquariums staff, responders, veterinarians from partner organizations, trained volunteers, and municipalities, town, county, state and federal officials to successfully respond to marine mammal strandings following all regulations related to the federal stranding agreement, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Conducting scientific research on marine mammals, research project planning and design, data collection, management, and analysis, direct stranding response coordination and logistics, performing necropsies, transport of specimens, and collection, storage, and sharing of samples and data.
* Responsible for onsite outreach to the public, assisting the development of curriculum, exhibits, programs, and events, and contributing to media communications.
* Recruits, coordinates, and provides training for a team of regional stranding coordinators, stranding assistants, and volunteers.
* Assists partners in scientific research projects and program development.
* This position may present informational/educational lectures on related topics and may publish articles to disseminate scientific information.
* Assists in preparation and submission of external funding proposals, submitting progress reports, maintaining permits, and managing a program budget.
Position/Physical Requirements:
* Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required.
* Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 90 days of employment.

* Thorough knowledge of marine mammal biology, anatomy, characteristics, behavior, and habitats.
* Knowledge of zoonotic diseases, experience monitoring marine mammal vital signs, and experience conducting complete necropsies of marine mammals.
* Experience planning, designing, and conducting original research in areas of natural science while compiling and recording results in accepted scientific formats.
* Experience obtaining accurate Level A and Human Interaction stranding data and conducting essential tissue sampling (Level B collection) while complying with processing, storing, and shipping protocols and procedures.

Master's degree in biology, zoology, or a science curriculum related to area of expertise from an appropriately accredited institution

Section/Unit Description: The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, and sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 4,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.
