- Make hourly inspections of equipment, monitoring operation of main and auxiliary equipment and check for malfunctions in equipment or piping.
- Maintain a log at the beginning of the shift on all gauges and meters such as steam, water, gas, fuel oil and air pressure. Maintain continual surveillance of control panels and listen for unusual sounds.
- Maintain water in boilers at required level by manipulating valves controlling boiler feed pump pressure and blows down boilers and water column at regularly prescribed intervals.
- Evaluate the need for an increase or decrease in service and determine the change in temperature, pressure and flow necessary to satisfy varying plant load situations. Activate additional boilers as necessary.
- Remove water samples and perform tests. Check results and treat water with chemicals as necessary and blow off impurities. Test and control the hardness level of Hospital water. Must record results and action taken in log.
- Perform corrective repair work as circumstances dictate until maintainer is in control of the equipment or system.
- Monitor the Hospital oxygen and nitrous oxide supplies and pressure and reorders as necessary.
- Cleans boiler room and basement equipment and perform related custodial and cleaning duties as necessary
- Train and supervise the work of Plant Operations Assistant. Ensure that correct and safe work practices are followed.
- Perform routine maintenance work such as unclogging drains and repair heating, cooling and ventilation equipment in patient care areas and offices throughout the Health System.
Requirements
- Read, write and perform simple calculations at a level generally acquired through completion of a general high school or technical school education plus six months or less of special preparation outside of school.
- Operate and maintain boilers, turbines, steam engines, pumps, condensers, chillers and air conditioning units at a level generally acquired through two to three years experience in boiler room operations.
- Must be licensed as a Stationary Engineer by the Department of Industrial Relations, State of Ohio, or become licensed within 1 year of job acceptance.
- Use good judgment in working in general to perform independently but in situations where the procedures have been previously established.
- Requires responsibility for material and equipment. Probable cost in case of improper or careless handling of materials and/or equipment would be substantial.
- Direct one other employee.
- Must have valid Ohio driver's license.
