Barnwell County Consolidated School District Job DescriptionPosition Title: STEM Teacher Needs to be certified in middle school math or science Department: Middle SchoolReports to: PrincipalFSLA status: ExemptTerms of Employment: Grant funded position; where funding is available- Teacher Salary ScaleGENERAL SUMMARY:The purpose of this position is to positively provide strategies and support to students not performing at grade level through intervention groups that address skills needed to learn to kinesthetically and successfully comprehend basic mathematical skills. This position is also responsible for collaborating with teachers in promoting interdisciplinary STEM activities into the core curriculum and providing supplemental STEM lessons through the activity schedule.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)
  • Teach targeted mathematics intervention to small groups of students daily using research- based strategies and resources.
  • Collaborate with teachers individually to identify the mathematical needs of students, to set learning goals and targets, and to problem solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth of students in mathematics.
  • Assist teachers with the collection of data, analysis of data results and supports the sharing of findings with all staff.
  • Assist teachers with using the analysis of data to impact mathematics instruction in the classroom.
  • Reviews student achievement and assists with placing students in appropriate math intervention and support services.
  • Meets regularly with the classroom teacher to plan mathematics instruction that correlates with the individual student's needs or as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Attends professional development to enhance knowledge of pedagogy and content especially with mathematics.
  • Provides professional development to classroom teachers regarding effective mathematics strategies.
  • Maintains and submits accurate and up to date management records of all students' progress.
  • Communicates regularly with parents concerning a child's progress in intervention.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to literacy as assigned by supervisor.
  • Delivers STEM-oriented instruction through project-based learning methods.
  • Attends professional development and training related to STEM programs and methodologies, staying abreast of current research.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media, and performance assessments, which guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and student learning.
  • Uses technology to promote learning, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Works directly with school administrators and staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of STEM initiatives and curriculum.
  • Organizes, develops, and coordinates special STEM events/activities.
  • Coaches teachers on STEM initiatives and instructional best practices in the STEM areas.
  • Serves as liaison to prospective or selected STEM vendors, to determine the best resources, options and innovations that will optimize the learning experience for students and staff.
  • Initiates new programs that support the STEM vision
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:NoneQUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum of five years successful classroom experience that includes teaching mathematics. Endorsement or working towards endorsement in Read to Succeed. Evidence of effective instructional skills. Current South Carolina Teacher Certification required.LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read and interpret documents and procedure manuals. Ability to assist with writing reports as needed. Ability to speak and present effectively before staff and parents.MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:Ability to assist with basic mathematical skills with students. Ability to work with multiple groups of students on a daily basis. Ability to keep accurate records of student's progress and benchmark data, pre-assessment data, computer-based instruction data, and other data points that pertain to students in intervention sessions.REASONING ABILITY:Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions with IEPs and other accommodations made for each student. Ability to interpret data reports from formative and summative achievement data.KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of classroom activities pertaining to the specific duties on the job.Knowledge of the policies and procedures of the organization.Knowledge of the materials and information that must be prepared for classroom instructional activities.Knowledge of the records and reports that must be completed and maintained.Knowledge of the special needs of (emotionally and/or physically) students with disabilities.Knowledge of progress monitoring and maintaining intervention records.SKILLS and ABILITIES:Ability to provide supplemental instruction to students through explanation and demonstration, or supervised practice.Ability to assist teacher in various classroom and instructional activities.Ability to supervise students, individually and in groups, in and out of the classroom during short periods of time.Ability to effectively assist the teacher to instruct and assist students with disabilities in academics.Ability to operate general office equipment such as a copier, computer and telephone.Ability to assist in preparing materials for classroom activities.Ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.
