POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Lab Assistant. In this role, the successful candidate Processes specimens for subsequent testing by technical staff. Collects blood as assigned. Performs general clerical and other related duties as required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Trained to recognize potential hazards in the workplace and proper procedures for handling hazardous substances. Those working in the Histology Department are trained in additional procedures for disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Processes specimens for subsequent testing by the technical staff. These duties to include centrifuging, separating, numbering, labelling, organizing, measuring (e.g. 24 hour urine specimens) and preparing 24 hour urine bottles (adding preservatives).
  • Performs general clerical duties to include clocking-in and logging-in requisitions, distributing specimens to appropriate sections, answering telephone inquires, transmits reports (via telephone, fax, computer terminal), scheduling appointments, registering patients, maintaining statistics and generate computer logs and worksheets to verify proper specimen processing.
  • Maintains inventory of section supplies.
  • Prepares paperwork and specimens for the reference laboratory
  • Collects blood by venipuncture or finger puncture on patients as assigned.
  • Maintain and document temperatures of incubators and refrigeration equipment.
  • Instructs patients on protocol for various laboratory tests.
  • Occasionally escorts patients to other areas of the Medical Center.
  • Transports inter and intradepartmental laboratory reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

ADDITIONAL POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary job function is daily blood collection.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • To qualify you must have a High School Graduate or G.E.D.
  • Completion of approved phlebotomy program with documentation of training or 200 hours of phlebotomy training required.
