Performs all reprocessing activities of instrumentation, supplies and equipment used for patient care. Receives, collects and transports contaminated instruments and supplies. Responsibilities:
  • 1. Collects, transports, receives and processes contaminated instruments, equipment, linen and refuse.
    • 1.1 Makes daily rounds at pre-scheduled times to nursing units to retrieve contaminated items from soiled utility rooms for return to decontamination in accordance with established procedures with no more than 10 exceptions as observed by supervisor.
  • 2. Sorts, inspects, assembles, wraps and sterilizes instrumentation, linens and miscellaneous supplies.
    • 2.1 Sorts and distributes all instruments to proper location within 5-10 minutes of load receipt from washer/sterilizer equipment as observed by supervisor with no more than 10-20 exceptions.
  • 3. Maintains stock level of pre-packaged unsterile supplies. Inspects, prepares and packages linens and miscellaneous items.
    • 3.1 Checks prn stock levels daily and maintains a sufficient amount based on pre-set quotas as observed by monthly random review of supply levels by supervisor.
  • 4. Performs and interprets all sterilization monitoring activities.
    • 4.1 Prepares all packages with an internal chemical indicator per department procedure with no more than 20exceptions as indicated by random monthly tray audits and feedback from user departments.
  • 5. Processes, picks and stores sterile linens for O.R. and Surgease.
    • 5.1 Prepares linen packs for processing as they are received from the Pack Room, with no more than 10-20 exceptions as indicated by supervisory observation.
  • 6. Operates equipment in a proper and safe manner. Maintains equipment in proper and safe working condition. Maintains work and supply areas in a clean and orderly condition.
    • 6.1 Operates all sterilization equipment in accordance with department procedure as observed by supervisor.
  • 7. Assists with the duties of the Laboratory Aide as assigned by supervisor.
    • 7.1 Acts as a back up for the Laboratory Aide as directed and observed by supervisor.
  • 8. Assists with the duties of other positions as assigned by supervisor.
    • 8.1 Acts as a back up for other positions as directed and observed by supervisor.
  • 9. Completes non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN or RN.
    • 9.1 Place IV solutions in appropriate storage area within Central Supply.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION

High school graduate or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

Competent and physically able to perform all duties in CSS independently (Decontam, Assembly, Sterilization and Distribution). No current written disciplinary actions. Meet or exceed production standards. Must Achieve national certification from CBSPD or IAHCSMM by the first anniversary date.

LICENSURE

Must Achieve certification from CBSPD or HSPA by the first anniversary date.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Knowledge of Operating Room surgical instrumentation and Quality Assurance practices. Ability to assemble all CSS, Surgease, and Main Operating Room surgical instrumentation. Possess excellent knowledge of CSS operations. Must have excellent knowledge of sterilization equipment and sterility assurance practices. Must demonstrate proficiency in biological monitoring, testing of sterilization equipment and all required forms of documentation and record keeping. Must be able to solve problems utilizing excellent communication skills and medical terminology skills in potentially stressful situations.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds repetitively. Majority of tasks require ability to push, pull, bend and stand throughout 8 hour shifts and perform fine hand manipulations.

Additional Information:

Sterile Processing Technician experience required.
