Overview

Summary/ Objective

The position of a HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, and Environment) Coordinator is responsible for assuring compliance with local, state, federal and Company and client health, safety, security, and environment regulations in all areas. A HSSE Coordinator will perform work as required to maximize the quality of the Company while maintaining the specified expectations of the client and ensure safe working environment while performing work and will conduct all Company business in accordance with Company policies and procedures and maintain professionalism throughout all business dealings, both internally and externally.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Maintain current applicable OSHA, state and local safety and health standards and regulations. Prepare and submit reports as required. Actively and adequately promote safe working performance to all levels of employees. Assure that all required regulatory documentation is maintained at the jobsite and available for review. Assure the complete and accurate accountability of all Company employees in the event of plant emergency requiring evacuation. Assure the safety and health of Company employees. Attend meetings as necessary/required. Be visible and spend approximately 85% of shift in the field or unit. Closely monitor and enforce the Company safety rules and regulations throughout the duration of the project. Conduct incident investigations, analyze causes and formulate recommendations for corrective and preventative action. Conduct daily safety surveys. Conduct safety orientations for new hires as needed. Conduct safety training, meetings and develop materials as needed. Fully investigate, report, and document all incidents, injuries, near misses, first aid cases, lost time injuries-including vehicle accidents, etc. Identify unsafe acts/ conditions and initiate corrective action with responsible supervision. Inform safety supervisor daily of all serious non-compliance safety discrepancies. Maintain continuous safety planning to cover jobs where circumstances have changed, and new hazards require new controls. Maintain working relationship with supervisor, subcontractors, client personnel and local medical facilities. Must report immediately (by name and in writing) any employee terminated from employment for safety rule infraction to HSSE Manager. Perform formal, documented audits daily and each shift, noting any discrepancies and mitigating steps taken to alleviate a hazardous condition or unsafe act. Correct deficiencies on the spot. Prepare reports, participate in safety related activities, and maintain logs and records as assigned. Prepare safety bulletins, alerts and toolbox safety meeting topics as directed Provide basic first aid treatment for non-serious injuries/illnesses; render emergency medical treatment (if properly trained) for serious injuries/illnesses; make sure that all injured/ill personnel receive prompt medical attention at an approved medical facility; transport employees with injury/illness to local medical facility. Review, attend and audit craft safety meetings to ensure effectiveness. Maintain poise and focus under time constraint and adverse conditions. Attend and complete trainings as required by the Company and client. Pass all required drug/alcohol testing and background requirements. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will have some supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a petrochechemical / refinery environment. Exposure to cold working conditions during winter months and hot working conditions during the summer months; exposure to noise, workers must wear protecting hearing equipment or frequently shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level. In an emergency situation, exposure to hazardous chemicals may occur and the use of a respirator is required. All employees are required to be fit tested for the various respirators used as well as the ability to successfully pass a pulmonary function test (PFT).

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of the job, the position of a HSSE Coordinator may be extremely physical at times. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required, and for long periods of time to bend, stoop, walk, climb, squat, reach, kneel, push/pull, stand, sit, hand strength and dexterity. A HSSE Coordinator will frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift more than 50 pounds. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must be able to work at heights and be able to climb ladders and stairways and work off platforms.

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

This is a project- based position. Typical days and hours of work are variable/ project dependent. Over-time work is common and may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

Travel is expected. Extensive travel throughout U.S. and overnight stay for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years' experience in a safety related position in the petrochemical/ refinery industry. First Aid and CPR trained. Class A driver's license and a clean MVR.

Preferred Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and 7 years' experience in a safety related position in the petrochemical/ refinery industry.
