DescriptionGENERAL DESCRIPTION: Resident Companion assists the elderly who are functionally, physically, and/or socially impaired and need twenty-four hour oversight. The resident companion's role is to assist residents with those activities of daily living in which they are unable to perform without help, fostering at all times residents' independence and freedom of choice. All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy of assisted care. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides assistance with activities of daily living (ADL's):
  • Dressing/undressing: ensures that clothes are clean, appropriate in season,
  • and presentable.
  • Bathing: provides assistance with personal hygiene (i.e. shaving, dental
  • hygiene, nail care, hair care, etc.)
  • Mobility: uses various devices that enable resident to ambulate
  • independently (i.e. cane, walker, wheelchair, crutch, etc.)
  • Dining: meal time reminders, sets up and cleans tables as needed, transports
  • food from buffet to table, waits tables as needed, room service as needed.
  • Toileting: assists in transfer and dressing, assists in applying incontinence
  • devices.
  • Laundry services: delivers and picks up bed/bath linen; personal laundry possible. Will come in contact with a variety of laundry chemicals.
  • 3. Health maintenance/monitoring: observes and reports physical/mental changes to Manager or designated nursing staff; conducts room checks and resident rounds; monitors for safety hazards; reports resident related incidents/accidents. 4. Activity Program: encourages and reminds resident of scheduled programs. Assists with activities as needed. 5. Emergency Preparedness: responds to and acts appropriately in emergency/disaster situations or drills. Attends mandatory inservices as directed plus enough additional inservices to meet requirements for STNA. NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Answers phone for residents; takes messages for residents.
  • Reads correspondence when requested.
  • Delivers packages if needed.
  • Monitors and ensures entrances for cleanliness and safety concerns.
  • Transfers lightweight furniture occasionally.
  • Minor janitorial services as needed.
  • Encourages a buddy-system for resident security.
  • May make non-emergency phone calls for residents.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned by manager or other Administrative personnel.
  • RESPONSIBILITY AND DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY:
  • Able to make reasonable independent decisions in absence of Manager or other administrative personnel.
  • Keeps Manager abreast of any incidents or unusual occurrences.
  • Responsible to contact manager or other Village personnel in times of emergency.
  • EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Must meet minimum requirements established by the State of Ohio.
  • Be willing to take continuing education classes.

  • Mop bucket/wringer
  • Laundry equipment
  • Paging equipment
  • Office equipment including telephone
  • Nurse call/emergency response panels
  • Fire alarm panels
  • Dietary equipment
  • Hoyer lifts/sit to stand lift
  • SPECIFICATIONS - MENTAL/PHYSICAL:
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Able to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability in order to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sufficient physical abilities, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of the position can be fully met.
  • Position requires movement throughout the day.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Assistance will generally be available for more than 50 lbs.
  • Exposed to body fluids, infection, odors, and erratic behavior of residents.
  • Bends, kneels, stands, pushes, pulls, carry, squat, crawl, and reach during extended and sustained times.
  • Pushes wheelchairs and recliners with residents on them, weighing up to 250 lbs.
  • Assists weight-bearing residents weighing up to 200 lbs. from bed to bedside commode, and to chair on a daily basis.
  • Exerts considerable force in pulling and pushing daily.
  • RELATIONS WITH OTHERS:
  • Maintains cordial relations with residents and family, staff, visitors, surveyors, etc.
  • Participates in maintaining a teamwork environment.
  • Willing to work with others in a cooperative spirit.
  • Possesses a high degree of interpersonal skills and capability of relating to a variety of people and personalities.
  • Possesses initiative, good judgment, and ability to work with residents during times of acute illness.
  • LEARNING PERIOD REQUIRED:
  • Ninety (90) day probationary period.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Indoors: works in well lighted and ventilated areas. Subject to possible falls, odors and injuries from equipment. May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, chemicals and various viruses, including Hepatitis B and AIDS.
  • Outdoors: possible exposure to weather extremes.
