Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesNOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.Performs a variety of heavy manual work in connection with the repair, maintenance, and construction of stormwater infrastructure.Assists in storm drainage system maintenance, cleaning, and construction.Acts as lead worker on projects.Operates a pickup truck, backhoe, skid steer, and chain saw.Operates, maintains, and repairs departmental equipment.Assists supervisors in planning and organizing work. Assists supervisors in training unskilled laborers.Interacts with the public in a professional manner.Assists with the installation of trench shoring equipment.Follows all safety policies and procedures.Understands and complies with the permissible activities that affect water quality and quantity conditions in aquatic areas around the city.Set-up work zones.Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum RequirementsEducation and/or ExperienceHigh School diploma or GED. One (1) year of experience in maintenance, repair, and/or construction work.Other RequirementsPossession of a valid N.C. driver's license or ability to obtain within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.Possession of a valid OSHA Competent Person for Excavation, Trenching, and Shoring certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date. Possession of a valid Confined Space Safety certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date. Supplemental InformationKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks.Thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work.Thorough knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work.Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.Job Related Physical Activity RequirementsThis position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
