Salary : $42,696.00 - $66,773.00 Annually Location : 2523 Charlotte Highway, NC Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 202300253 Department: STREET DEPARTMENT Opening Date: 12/09/2024 Closing Date: 1/9/2025 11:59 PM Eastern FLSA: Non-Exempt General Statement of Duties Operates a variety of light, medium and heavy construction equipment performing functions requiring a high level of skill and competence. Distinguishing Features of the Class Employees in this class operate light, medium and heavy maintenance and construction equipment requiring a high level of skill or competence in the construction, maintenance, and repair of street, sidewalks, drainage systems, and related infrastructure also subject to afterhours call back. When not operating equipment, these employees work with the crew to install, repair, replace or maintain sections of streets, sidewalks, curb and gutter, storm drain, street potholes and utility cuts and participates in snow and ice control. Employee performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs to assigned equipment. In this position, employees are subject to hazards in street maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, oils, dusts, mists, tight quarters, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, chemicals, and narrow passageways. The employee is subject to Level III OSHA Standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for accuracy, safety, and adherence to established standards. Duties and Responsibilities Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as motor grader, loader, backhoe, asphalt paver, trackloader, trackhoe and skidstear. Operates backhoe to cut and remove asphalt street sections, sidewalks, or curb and gutter for patch or reconstruction; digs trenches, culverts, and loads and unloads construction materials, etc. May provide training to new employees or lower skill employees in equipment operation and work procedures; may assign work and serve as crew leader in the absence of higher-level supervision. Operates equipment in street and pedestrian traffic, around other ground utilities and in other tight places requiring care and skill. Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance to assigned equipment. Cleans and washes equipment on a regular basis. Ensures safe work zones for personnel and equipment. When not operating equipment performs semi-skilled and unskilled work on the job site such as paving potholes and repairing utility cuts, constructing curb and gutter and sidewalks, cleaning catch basins and other tasks. Performs landscaping duties along roadside, curbs, and on other public lands. Performs other duties as requested. Minimum Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED and three to five years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment related to the areas of assignment including some construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirement Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License.
