Job DescriptionResponsible for performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks and other duties as required within the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. An employee in this class performs routine manual labor in the construction, maintenance, repair and upkeep of streets, sidewalks, storm water systems, curbs and gutters. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Street Department Supervisor and is evaluated by visual inspection of work, periodic meetings, compliance with safety procedures, and overall quantity and quality of work performed. Essential Job Functions Assists with the demolition and replacement of concrete and asphalt, as needed, throughout the city. Shovels, digs, cuts, tamps and rolls asphalt in the repair and maintenance of city streets. Constructs forms and pours concrete to build and repair sidewalks and curbs. Helps transport equipment to job site; sets up ensuring traffic control and safety. Cleans job site by blowing off excess asphalt, shoveling excess concrete, etc. Removes fallen trees from streets and bridges. Puts out barricades for activities and flooding. Performs other work as may be assigned in other City divisions and departments. Works outside normal work hours in an emergency or on-call basis. Assists with removal of snow and ice from city streets, sidewalks, parking lots, etc. Performs other related job duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High school diploma; and one (1) year of experience in general maintenance of facilities and buildings; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Class C Driver's License to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, handling and repetitive motions. Work requires dexterity in the hands for typing and operation of standard office equipment and visual acuity is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and to operate a computer terminal. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection of products, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods some of which in emergency situations. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is primarily performed in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Employee is subject to noise which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body and is also subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, oils, fuels, etc. Employee is subject to atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dusts and oils.
