STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER Public Works / Streets The Street Maintenance Worker plays a critical role in maintaining safe & efficient infrastructure for Salina's citizens by performing tasks like street repairs, debris removal, & operating essential equipment. Workers ensure the community remains accessible & safe during all seasons. The position offers valuable hands-on experience with construction & public safety, aligning with industry standards for municipal maintenance roles. On-the-job Training: Street Maintenance Workers are provided on-the-job training by experienced staff who offer hands-on guidance in operating specialized equipment, performing street repairs, & maintaining public infrastructure. - Performs a variety of semi-skilled & skilled manual labor in the construction & maintenance of streets, storm sewers, buildings & other municipal facilities.
- May act as lead worker for new and/or seasonal employees; oversees work crews in the absence of supervisors.
- Operates & maintains light to heavy duty equipment including tandem trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, front-end loaders, rollers, boom trucks & related equipment; uses a variety of hand & power tools.
- Patches streets; determines repair requirements & calculates pavement materials & quantities; understands mathematical concepts to include basic arithmetic; performs concrete & masonry work.
- Loads & hauls equipment, sand & gravel, asphalt & other construction & maintenance materials.
- Provides public safety in construction zones in accordance with the MUTCD.
- Assists on the flood control system; services & maintains flood control gates & pumps; makes plumbing repairs.
- Services & performs minor equipment repairs; performs minor welding.
- Removes storm debris & snow; places barricades.
- Mows & trims trees, grass, weeds & shrubbery; applies pesticides.
Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: One (1) year construction or maintenance work. Requirements:
- Must live within 40-minutes response time.
- Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license at hire.
- Preferred possession of a valid Kansas Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brakes & tanker endorsements, or obtain within one (1) year from start date.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees & pay hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training at Salina Area Technical College. Work Type: Very heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Machines, Tools, Equipment: Asphalt equipment, backhoes, boom trucks, brooms, chain saw, concrete vibrator, dump trucks, earth vibrator & tamps, front-end loaders, hand & power tools, hoes, jackhammer, light to heavy duty equipment, mud-jack, rakes, pickup, pumps, rollers, salt spreaders, shovel, street sweepers, tandem trucks, tractor mowers, tractor loader, & weed-eaters. Hours: Workweek generally Monday-Friday. Starting pay DOQ:
- $19.93-20.93/hr.
- $41,454-43,534/yr.
- Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
- 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
- 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
