The Street Maintenance Worker performs manual labor tasks in and around the City, including but not limited to digging trenches and sweeping debris from the streets. The Street Maintenance Worker is exposed to and must be able to work in adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, rain, strong odors and/or smoke, exposure to dust or pollen, and heat, cold, or extreme weather conditions. Weekend work and occasional reassignment to other departments or crews are occasionally required.Organizational Relationships:
  • Reports primarily to Street Crew Leader; however, the Street Maintenance Worker may also report to others including other Crew Leaders, the Public Works Foreman, and the Public Works Director.
  • Does not supervise any employees.
  • Other: Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various persons in other City Departments and the general public.
  • Essential Job Duties:
  • In addition to other duties listed in this Job Description, the Worker must be able to perform the following additional essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Repair and replace asphalt and concrete on city property and right of ways using hand and power tools.
  • Use hand tools to dig ditches or holes;
  • Hand shovel dirt, gravel, concrete or asphalt;
  • Tamp, pack, and level dirt, asphalt or other materials;
  • Load and unload materials and equipment;
  • Trim trees, pick up brush, and load brush onto a truck;
  • Cut grass using a push or power mower or power trimmer;
  • Occasionally operate other light equipment;
  • Perform light maintenance and construction duties;
  • Care for and maintain equipment.
  • Follow City and Department policies and procedures and the instructions of his or her supervisor.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and others (internally and externally) in order to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer inquiries, address issues, or resolve and/or report problems or complaints.
  • Use good judgment and make good decisions in matters related to the job.
  • Assist others; be helpful, cooperative and courteous, and demonstrate a good attitude in all dealings with the public, co-workers and others.
  • Report in a timely manner all issues, concerns and questions to the supervisor or others as appropriate in the chain of command. 16. Take up matters affecting his or her job with his or her immediate supervisor and through proper channels.
  • Punctual, regular, on-site, in-person attendance is a requirement of the job.
  • Work outside of normal working hours as required and be on call and available for duty during emergency periods as defined by City Council, the City Manager or the Department Director.

  • RequirementsEducation and Other Requirements:
  • High School graduation or GED.
  • Have and maintain a clear and valid Texas Class C Motor Vehicle Operators License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Successfully complete various background checks, pre-employment medical/physical test(s), and driver's license check.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:In order to successfully achieve the goals of the Public Works Department, the Worker must have the ability to safely:
  • Operate machines, power and hand tools and equipment to spread, smooth, level, or steel-reinforce concrete or asphalt on road beds, sidewalks, and other surfaces.
  • Assist in observing distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow, and in indicating low spots for workers to add material.
  • Set out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic.
  • Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead.
  • Use hand tools and operate power tools as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Drive trucks to transport crews and equipment to work sites.
  • Erect, install, or repair guardrails, road shoulders, berms, highway markers, warning signals, and highway lighting, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Learn and remember information and details relating to the job;
  • Use hand tools, power tools, lawn mowers and weed eaters and learn to make minor repairs to small equipment;
  • Work outdoors in all kinds of weather;
  • Do hard labor such as digging, shoveling, and raking.
  • Lift and/or move unassisted object weighing at least 94 pounds;
  • Maintain balance, walk, sit, stoop, bend, kneel, stand and reach;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and interact effectively in English with co-workers and the public;
  • Climb and descend ladders and stairs and work above ground;
  • Walk on a variety of surfaces;
  • Drive vehicles;
  • Stand and/or walk for extended periods of time;
  • Hear and speak by means of radio; and
  • Report for duty after normal business hours in the event of emergencies or unusual conditions, as required.
  • Physical and Mental RequirementsThe Worker must be able to perform the following physical and mental requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Engage in hard labor such as lifting, pushing, digging, sweeping and raking;
  • Maintain balance, walk, sit, stoop, bend, kneel, grasp, push and pull; stand and reach unassisted; ability to climb and descend ladders and stairs and work from heights;
  • Walk on a variety of uneven, sometimes slippery surfaces;
  • Stand and walk while working for extended periods of time;
  • Good motor coordination skills, that is, the Street Maintenance Worker must be able to coordinate his or her eyes, hands, fingers and feet rapidly and accurately in order to handle precise movements as when operating equipment or driving a motor vehicle, and in response to visual, auditory and other stimuli;
  • Work outdoors while exposed to all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, in close physical proximity to other people, and in open or closed vehicles or equipment;
  • Lift and/or move, unassisted, objects weighing as much as ninety-four (94) pounds;
  • Engage in rapid, strenuous physical movement as in emergency situations;
  • See clearly and be able to read and understand warning signs and labels;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and interact effectively with co-workers and the public;
  • Tolerate fumes, dust, dirt and noise and have the ability to wear required personal protective devices;
  • Must be able to withstand whole body vibration when operating certain equipment;
  • Frequently walk, stand, stoop/bend, crawl/kneel and reach, grasp, push and pull, at times on uneven surfaces;
  • Remember information, details and instructions relating to the job;
  • Understand, learn, and communicate information about the job;
  • Understand the meaning of and use and speak words understandably and effectively in the English language;
  • Good hearing and listening abilities, that is, the Street Maintenance Worker must be able to hear spoken words from co-workers, supervisors and others;

  • Ability to report for duty after normal business hours while on standby duty and during emergencies;
