A Day in the Life:
The Street Supervisor oversees and directs crews responsible for street repair, reconstruction, signs and markings, traffic signals, sweeping, traffic control, stormwater/flood control systems, and snow/ice removal. This role involves planning, assigning, and inspecting work activities, supervising and evaluating staff, preparing reports, and handling administrative duties. The Street Supervisor may assume the responsibilities of the Superintendent of Streets in their absence. Planning and Coordination:
* Plan and assign work activities for street crews, including repair and maintenance of asphalt and concrete streets, grading dirt streets and alleys, pavement marking, sign installation, traffic signals, street sweeping, barricade installation, stormwater/flood control systems, and snow/ice removal.
* Provide technical expertise to crews and review work to ensure quality and timely completion.
* Develop and implement operating procedures and standards for the Street Division.
Supervision and Training:
* Supervise and evaluate staff, address employee concerns, counsel, discipline, and complete performance appraisals.
* Review and process time records and leave requests.
* Conduct interviews and make hiring recommendations.
* Train employees on safety procedures and equipment, and enforce compliance in the work environment.
Administrative Duties:
* Prepare and document productivity and activity reports.
* Provide budgetary input, assist in developing capital improvement project budgets, monitor expenditures, and review purchase requisitions.
* Assist in writing bid specifications for equipment and materials, and oversee procurement of commodities, supplies, and materials.
* Ensure compliance with purchasing policies, proper coding, and processing of bills and invoices.
* Inspect, test, and evaluate incoming supplies, materials, and equipment for quality control.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
* A high school diploma or GED is required. Related technical degree or college credit is preferred.
* A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in skilled street maintenance, repair, or construction work, and at least 1 year of supervisory or lead work experience is preferred.
* A Class B Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with air brake endorsement preferred. Kansas LTAP Road Scholar Level Two Certificate (45 hours minimum training) or approved equivalent required within 3 years of appointment.
