Job Type Full-timeDescriptionPerforms introductory skilled trades work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage ways and related facilities, operates a variety of motorized equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. This position is designated as essential during emergency or disaster situations. Work is performed with the Close supervision of the Streets Crew Chief and the limited supervision of the Streets Maintenance Supervisor.Essential Job Functions
  • Repairs and maintains streets; repairs potholes in street with asphalt; sets concrete forms; helps pour concrete; performs general landscaping duties upon completion of projects.
  • Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching.
  • Builds and sets forms and finishes concrete, patches new and old concrete work.
  • Removes damaged sections of asphalt; fills holes with patching materials, hot asphalt, and tamps or rolls patches.
  • Constructs, maintains, and repairs street signs, catch basins, storm drainpipes, curbs, sidewalks, street stripping, retaining walls, and other infrastructure within Town right of way and maintenance easements.
  • Performs minor repair and preventative maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment; performs oil changes, replaces filters and spark plugs, checks tire pressure and fluids.
  • Assists with the installation and removal of traffic control devices for operation and maintenance activities.
  • Operates backhoe, front end loader, chainsaw, concrete saw, jackhammer, asphalt roller, weed eater, stump grinder, and other equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public works facilities.
  • Performs work during emergency or disaster situations upon request and as assigned by management.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimal (less than one year) of experience in general construction, street maintenance and in the operation of medium to heavy sized equipment and trucks.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
  • Obtain Flagger certification within 1 year of appointment to the position.
  • Obtain Confined Space certification within 1 year of appointment to the position.
  • Obtain FEMA Class 100 and 700 certifications within 1 year of appointment to the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape, and related construction, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • General knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment to which the employee is assigned.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to read and write basic instructions and work orders.
  • Ability to perform work during emergency or disaster situations as assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
Physical RequirementsThis work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and walking, frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).NOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
