  • Under the direction of the Lead Athletic Trainer, The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) position performs a variety of duties including assisting in an outreach onsite program to local high schools. The CSCS will assist in the contracted school system with the supervision of weight room as well as with the conditioning activities of the student athletes and/or school staff. They will also assist with the education of coaching staff to promote safe and effective training programs to all student athletes. They will work in conjunction with the Athletic Trainers in the treatment and prevention of injury and in the care, evaluation, and rehabilitation of Firelands' patients, high school athletes, and athletes involved in recreational activities within the community.
  • Design and administer strength, stretching, aerobic, as well as plyometric and other anaerobic training programs that reduce the likelihood of athletic injuries and improve athletic performance.
  • Design and administer resistance training programs that maximize physical performance by using various training methods and modes including selecting appropriate exercises for athletes that produce training outcomes specific to each athlete's needs. Appling the principles of exercise sequence to ensure the desired training outcomes. Prescribing the appropriate training volumes, rest periods, frequencies, and load resistances, based on the athlete's health status, strength and conditioning levels, sport, and goals of training.
  • Design and administer strength and conditioning programs that use the principles of periodization to meet the specific needs of a sport.
  • Prescribe and administer exercises that develop and maintain muscular balances between antagonistic muscle groups in order to decrease susceptibility to an injury and enhance performance.
  • Instruct athletes how to execute resistance training exercises safely and correctly and thus obtain the desired results.
  • Develop and administer individual programs to account for biomechanical and physiological differences among individual athletes, taking into account their age, gender, training status, physical limitations, and past injuries.
  • Recognize acute and chronic physiological responses and adaptations to training and their implications to the design of sport-specific training programs.
  • Utilize information on body composition to prescribe training programs that bring about the desired results in body composition, hypertrophy, strength, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular endurance.
  • Educate athletes on the importance of good nutrition and its role in health and performance.
  • Educate athletes on the abuse and effects of performance enhancing substances, on relevant school policy and legal legislation, and on viable alternatives.
  • Maintains liaison between the athletes and the Physical Therapy Department at Firelands, in arranging physical examinations and in coordinating and conducting post injury rehabilitation for athletes; complies and maintains statistical records of team injuries for the Lead Athletic Trainer and/or Director.
  • Assist and advise athletic team coaches in planning and instructing physical training programs for athletes.
  • Instructs, supervises and reviews the performance of student trainers.
  • Studies, evaluates, and recommends new techniques and equipment in physical training, strength and conditioning, and physical therapy.
  • Completes all required paperwork to ensure that documentation reflects care provided and the outcomes achieved as evidenced by the clinical record.
What You Will Need:
  • BS in Exercise Science or related field.
  • Certification through the NSCA preferred
  • Work requires knowledge of the general principles of preventive physical care for athletes,first aid treatment and referral, and post injury rehabilitation normally acquired through a Bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine or other related Athletic Trainer program.
  • Advise on the selection, fit, function and maintenance of facility's exercise equipment as well as the facility's design and layout in regards to functioning safely.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive emergency action plan.
  • Develop injury prevention strategies.
  • Provide on-site support for all coaching staff and athletes in regards to sports conditioning programs.
  • Facilitate and perform strength and conditioning exercise programs.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive exercise programs for in-season/off-season and athletes of multiple sports.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of new research and practices in the field so as to provide the patients the best possible care and treatment.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Must possess a valid State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license and be insurable under Firelands' auto policy. Employee must provide proof of personal automobile liability insurance coverage upon request.
  • Ability to lift an average size patient and be mobile.
  • Successful completion of a ninety (90) day probationary period.
