- WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show three (3) years of full-time Structural Iron Worker experience. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
- EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a high school diploma or GED Equivalency. Applicants must also present a Certified Welder's License prior to appointment. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).
- EQUIVALENCY: Education/training may be substituted for work experience on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The total qualifying requirement is three (3) years. Eligible applicants must possess one of the following combinations of education and work experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of full-time paid professional experience as a Structural Iron Worker.
- Certified Journeyman Ironworker Certificate.
- A combination of related education/training (apprentice program/CCAC) and professional experience equal to three (3) years or more.
CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

POSITION DUTIES
- Performs electric and gas welding and burns materials for new or damaged bridge handrails, guardrails, steam lines, metal doors, electrical boxes, metal fencing, metal grates and plates, flex beams, etc., and makes iron and steel repairs to bridges and curbs.
- Welds and repairs structural iron working tools and equipment.
- Welds materials in all positions (vertical, horizontal and overhead).
- Fabricates iron/other metal materials for use on job (e.g., guardrails and bridge handrails, reinforcement rods, etc.).
- Properly prepares materials before welding; erects rigging and scaffolding.
- Performs work in accordance with City and departmental safety policies, standards and procedures.
- Drives truck and/or operates vehicles and equipment for the work.
- May drive a City vehicle.
- May use a variety of technological hardware (ie, computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (ie, email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.
- May direct the work of lower level personnel on assigned projects.
- Performs activities and functions of related lower level personnel as assigned or required.
