Academic Commons offers peer tutoring, course review sessions, data consultations, academic skills workshops, and more. Student employees in Academic Commons are responsible for providing and/or connecting students to these resources with a high-level of customer service. Position Specific Summary The Undergraduate Learning Assistant (ULA) will provide course and/or section-specific support to students enrolled in select classes. Department-specific variations between the programs do occur, so the positions may require slightly different tasks, based on subject. Learning assistants can be assigned to any one of the following courses: BISC 1111, CHEM 1110, CHEM 1111, CHEM 1112, ECON 1001, ECON 1011, ECON 1012, PHYS 1011, PHYS 1012, PHYS 1021, PHYS 1022, and PHYS 1026. Please note that other departments may be hiring ULAs outside of the subjects listed here. ULAs will host weekly review sessions/drop-in tutoring sessions to actively engage students in learning course material. ULAs may also attend class to model effective learning strategies and promote weekly sessions. ULAs may be expected to meet with their faculty member to discuss plans for class and review sessions, in addition to time spent in class. Standard Position Description The student will assist in supporting courses, administrative academic functions, and student success in the relevant course or subject area. Tasks may include: Checking class attendance and participation, grading assignments, taking notes during class, supporting student success in the class, and preparation of course materials. Special projects or duties may be assigned related to specific office needs.*Graduate students performing teaching functions or supporting courses with student interaction must be hired through the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships.Professional Outcomes Critical Thinking, Leadership, Professionalism Required Qualifications This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided (Students working in an instructional capacity should be very familiar with the subject area in which they are working).Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at GW
  • GPA of at least 3.0
  • B+ or better in the course to which they are assigned
  • Previous tutoring, teaching, customer service experience, and/or education coursework (ex. GWTeach, CPED 6100W)
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
