PositionStudent Accounts CounselorDivision:Division of Business & FinanceDepartment:Accounts ReceivableReports to:Director of Student AccountsPosition SummaryThe Student Accounts Counselor is responsible for developing and implementing in-house collection processes and in-house payment to serve as an intermediary step between normal billing/payment processes and the process of sending student accounts to third-party collection agencies, with an overall emphasis on creating a controlled and monitored collections process that will lead to the reduction of bad debt related to past due student account.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe results you will deliver each day that matter most! Send notifications of outstanding balances each semester after final Financial Aid funds have been applied. Send secondary billing notices, based on time-framed determined by Bursar. Create student payment plan options, based on criteria determined by Bursar. Create, implement and manage balance dispute process. Monitor account balances and remove holds based on criteria determined by Bursar. Oversees posting of payments made to collection agencies to student accounts. Generate lists for posting collection fee charges to student accounts as well as to submit accounts with outstanding balances to collection agencies. Review accounts reports for activity submitted to collection agencies. Report outsourced collection results on a monthly basis. Report in-house collection and payment plan results on a monthly basis. Communicate with Financial Aid Officer(s) on student accounts. Reconcile bookstore credits to the student account. Work with Veterans Services regarding student military benefits and payments. Evening and weekend hours required as needed to meet departmental demands. Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned or required.Education/ ExperienceWhat you will need to be successful! Associate/bachelor's degree in business, Accounting, or Management One year of accounting, billing, collections, or other closely related business experience required. Microsoft Office experience/knowledge Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, be flexible and adaptable in a rapidly changing environment. Ability to effectively negotiate with both students and collection agencies. Ability to use good judgement when handling documents containing confidential information.
