DescriptionThe California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is looking to hire student assistants to participate in a public health internship, specifically with the California Pathways into Public Health (Pathways) program. The Pathways Internship Program is a paid, semester-long program for community college, undergraduate, and graduate students from historically underrepresented and diverse backgrounds to gain exposure to public services at local health departments (LHDs). Pathways has partnered with LHDs throughout California, representing the geographic and demographic diversity of the state. Apply to become a Pathways intern at an LHD near you! The Spring 2025 Pathways Internship Program will run from February 2 through May 16, 2025. Interns work fifteen (15) to twenty-nine (29) hours per week and will be placed in a participating LHD in or near their location. Hybrid and onsite placements are available. Please note that our program does not offer fully remote placements.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentThis is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) is dependent upon the mutual consent of UEI and the employee. This means that either UEI or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. The final work schedule will be determined by discussions between the intern and the host site.Additional Work ScheduleStudent Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 29 hours per workweek (Monday - Friday) throughout the set internship time.Minimum Qualifications
  • Maintain consistent and regular attendance.
  • Communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) in dealing with the public and/or other employees.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge and skills related to specific tasks, methodologies, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Adhere to departmental policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualification*Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority.   • Assist and collaborate with LHD staff on a wide variety of program development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation projects.
  • Interact with health department staff and external partners to address public health concerns.
  • Develop health education materials, presentations, data summaries and/or other materials.
  • Conduct outreach calls and gather research.
  • Take meeting notes and assist with meeting agenda development.
  • Attend LHD meetings and trainings
  • Participate in Pathways professional development opportunities (mentoring, check-in sessions, training, networking events, etc.) to help build a pathway into field of public health.
  • Set short- and long-term internship program goals.
  • Prepare and present final presentation on internship experience.
Physical RequirementsSit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
