DescriptionThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking a Student Assistant to perform a variety of general office work in a training capacity within the Administrative Services Branch, under the guidance of the Branch Chief, Administrative Services (Staff Services Manager I).RequirementsConditions of EmploymentThis is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. - Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and able to communicate clearly.
- Able to professionally perform computer tasks and multiple programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
- Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Duties and Responsibilities
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant delivers all district mail with accuracy, utilizing the prearranged mail stops.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant provides customer support via e-mail, or by phone. Opens the window for business by 7:30 am daily and closes it at 4:15 daily; assists in providing customer service by ensuring that customer interactions are handled with tact, courtesy and good judgment.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant prepares items for shipping in a timely fashion, making sure that the UPS, USPS and the GLS mail is processed and placed in the Loading Dock area by 3pm daily for courier pick up.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant assists in the District Records Center, put away boxes, entering information into the database, researching information for departments and address boxes for shipment to the State Archive Center for storage.
Physical RequirementsSit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation. Employee may be required to bend, stoop, and kneel whether working in the office or field environments. Also, must have the ability to climb ladders, work above ground, or walk on uneven surfaces.
