Job DescriptionNutrition and Food Sciences Student Assistant IV/PhlebotomistPhlebotomist will be responsible for assisting researchers with data collection to include blood samples. Work is performed under the protocol and supervision of researchers.Reports to: Derek Miketinas, Ph.D., Nutrition and Food Sciences-Houston; and Wayne Brewer, Ph.D., Physical Therapy-Houston. Supervises: No supervisory responsibilitiesEssential Duties:
- Obtains blood and laboratory specimens from research participants of all ages, using venipuncture and capillary collections methods.
- Processes laboratory specimens according to protocol including by centrifugation and separation.
- Provides for the security and privacy of all research participants and privileged information for ensuring research participants' right to privacy.
- Displays an attitude of caring and courtesy toward all research participants as appropriate, by treating them as customers, greeting them with a smile, referring to them by name, responding quickly to their needs, maintaining confidentiality and treating them at all times with dignity and respect.
- Demonstrates knowledge of safety collection devices and follows universal precautions.
- Adheres to organization and governmental standards, rules and regulations.
EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of Phlebotomist certification required.Experience
- Experience placing IV catheter safely and efficiently.
- Preferred: experience as a phlebotomist, nurse, paramedic, emergency medical technician, or related discipline.

- Reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.
- Time commitment: 1-5 hours per subject(s) visit
