Job Description:
Introduction Undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in the University of New Haven Co-Op Program are eligible to apply for the this Internship Program. Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis, and placement depends on departmentneeds, student needs, qualifications and goals, and availability. Placement may be in one of several areas: Police, Fire, Emergency Operations, or Public Safety Communications. Intern placements must be approved by both the student's academic advisor and the corresponding department's hiring team. Selected students may be required to sign a basic release regarding background information checks, Ride-Along Waivers, and a confidentiality agreement. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS Student interns are assigned based on area(s) of study, background, and emphasis on department need. Students are strongly urged to have a specific project in mind and approved by their faculty advisor. It should be designed to be completed during the internship. Students without specific projects or academic requirements, if accepted, may be rotated through one or more of the internship workstations. Supervisors in each area may assign specific tasks designed to both assist the department in its daily routine and familiarize the student with the purpose and function of individual units. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESWork Assignments may include:CHIEF'S OFFICE - UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE CHIEF OF POLICE, FIRE, OR DESIGNEE, THE INTERN MAY:
  • This designation encompasses the offices of the Chief, Assistant Chief, Supervisor of Management Services, Public Information Officer and staff. This opportunity allows the intern to see the administrative and organizational side of such work.
ADDITIONAL AREAS -
  • Interns may observe and assist in organizing schedules, planning for special events, deployment of the various Units and Teams.
  • Observe and assist with forensic work in a laboratory setting.
  • Assist with locating / organizing / documenting evidence from crime scenes, organizing of fingerprint cards and other documentation.
  • Assist detectives during crime scene operations.
  • Aide with police reports including motor vehicle accidents, bias and hate complaints, freedom of information requests and many other official documents required by law.
  • Interns may have the opportunity to assist detectives with investigations and or documentation of different types of crimes that occur in the city as needed.
  • Identify and review reports forwarded to the financial crime unit from the patrol division and determine if they meet the threshold for a Detective to possibly follow up with the complainant.
  • Learning about various financial scams and how victims could protect themselves from being targeted and defrauded.
  • Routine office duties
  • Assist with analyzing shots fired incidents throughout the city
  • Learn the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) report system
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations
  • Assist in identifying wanted persons in the City of New Haven
  • Attend meetings
  • Assist in preparing other reports as needed
  • Work with plainclothes Detectives and Task Force Officers
  • Interns will assist with the processing of officer certification and in-service training to ensure officers remain certified.
  • Assist in disseminating information to sworn personnel via practical training as well as lineup training when applicable
  • Assist in the set-up of In-Service classes for officer certification
  • Coordinate instructors to assist Police Officers Standards and Training Council
  • Assist in various tasks to aid in seamless training of new recruits and development
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCEMust be undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in an accredited college course at the University of New Haven.Other students: please apply to the available Intern openings.SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENTThis part time position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent part time positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy*. Candidates selected for internship will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement and a Release of Information in order to perform a background check.
