Job Summary

MUST BE A CURRENTLY ENROLLED CLAYTON STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT

Under moderate supervision, the Student Lab Assistant performs preparatory work to assist the Lab Professional; performs technical duties in the operation and maintenance of chemistry and physics laboratories and equipment; and follows established policies concerning the use and disposal of hazardous materials and/or waste. Occasionally, the Student Lab Assistant may also perform routine administrative tasks in an office setting.

Responsibilities

* Prepare the laboratory in advance by setting up any laboratory equipment needed for the experiment.

* Prepare simple reagents regularly used during lab procedures and ensure the lab is stocked with the necessary supplies. This includes monitoring all of the supplies used in the lab and restocking them as needed between sections.

* Operate, clean, and properly store laboratory equipment.

* Clean the labs thoroughly at the end of the week, ensure that all bottle caps are firmly fastened to prevent spills or leakage, and properly store generated chemical waste.

* Assist in completing chemical and equipment inventory semi-annually.

* Complete safety inspections and perform shower and eye wash checks weekly.

* Adhere to all laboratory safety guidelines and procedures, including wearing appropriate attire for the lab setting.

* Warmly greet visitors, faculty, staff, and students by exhibiting polite and professional communication skills.

* Carry out administrative duties such as filing, typing, copying, binding, scanning, organizing, etc.

* Handle and appropriately route paper mail and package deliveries.

* Be able to lift at least 30 pounds.

* Additional duties as determined by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

Must be in good academic standing

Must complete the Professionalism 101 Workshop within the first semester of hire

Must be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours during fall and spring semesters OR 6 credit hours during summer semesters.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

Chemistry major

GPA of 2.5 or better

Has completed at least one semester of a laboratory course

Good written and verbal communication skills

Capable of multitasking

Good problem-solving skills
