The Student Life & Leadership Specialist is part of the Student Life & Leadership Department team. It works closely in supporting the creation of intentional student engagement opportunities at the college. The position also works closely with and collaborates with other departments to develop and implement engagement strategies to ensure a student's connection to campus. An important part of this position is the collaboration with faculty, staff, and administrators who serve as student club and organization advisors to support a robust student club and organization life on campus for students. Distinguishing Career FeaturesThe Student Life & Leadership Specialist serves as an entry-level professional and procedural advisor as well as facilitator to enhance the Student Life & Leadership experience. The Student Life & Leadership Specialist assists with organizing and carrying out student activities and supports outreach and prospective student participation in assigned programs and/or student clubs and organizations. Advancement to the Student Leadership Coordinator position is determined by demonstrated experience, knowledge, and skills through open recruitment to a potential vacancy. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSpecific duties may vary among departments, divisions, and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
  • Coordinates and oversees various Student Life & Leadership programmatic components and activities related to student clubs and organizations, including but not limited to club recruitment events, Inter-Club Council (ICC), student club and organization handbook, and student government. Trains and supports faculty/staff advisors and student leaders for student clubs and organizations.
  • Assists with the coordination of the Associated Student Organization (ASO) leadership development program through advisement, program development, and training.
  • Coordinates activities related to students' participation on committees, community service programs, and projects.
  • Coordinates, plans, and implements Student Life & Leadership events and activities by organizing and connecting with the appropriate groups, college functional areas (i.e. Counseling, Veteran Services, Residential Life, etc.), vendors, and student leadership.
  • Assists in the administration of budgets and accounts for the assigned area. Monitors and reconciles various accounts and statements, records expenses, runs and provides status updates utilizing various statistical reports; identifies and analyzes discrepancies and errors. Advises administrator and/or manager related to necessary corrections.
  • Updates, prepares, and coordinates publication of documents relevant to the assigned area. Drafts correspondence and other documents of a complex nature. Formats documents and edits for grammar, spelling, accessibility, and accuracy. Takes notes and types various documents such as correspondence, reports, and memos.
  • Oversees and conducts surveys related to student satisfaction from activities, programs, and outcomes derived from activities and events; researches, compiles, and analyzes data for assessing program effectiveness and change.
  • Works collaboratively with the Student Leadership Coordinator and/or Director, Student Life & Leadership Development in providing quality training, programs, services, and advising to ASO students.
  • May serve on a variety of District and campus-wide committees with supervisory approval.
  • Reviews and recommends procedural changes to enable the assigned area to function more effectively. Collaborates with supervisor and others to establish work priorities and ensure appropriate implementation of decisions.
  • May provide work direction to other classified staff, hourly, and student assistants to support programming and the needs of students.
  • May serve as advisor and chaperone for ASO, ICC, and Student Life & Leadership field trips, conferences, conventions, and all other off-campus student trips. Organizes and manages trip planning and schedules.
  • Serves as a resource to students and the campus community. Resolves problems within area of responsibility and consults with designated management on diverse and/or complex issues. Interprets college policies and standards pertaining to student clubs and organizations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Required to abide by all District policies and procedures, including Board Policy 3050 - Code of Professional Ethics.

Physical Abilities

  • The position requires a Bachelor's degree. One year of experience in a student services environment.
    • Alternatively, may accept an Associate's degree and five years of student services experience.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed indoors or outdoors where health and safety considerations are minimal, but exist from sustained digital physical movements. May require work during early morning, evening, and weekend hours based on the needs of the department.

(ON-CAMPUS - in-person position) This is a temporary, categorical-funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based on available funds. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Thursday 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.
