JOB TITLE Student Specialist - IT JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY The Information Technology (IT) Student Specialist is responsible for providing Helpdesk and Desktop Support services at Florida Polytechnic University. The position will assist with setting up new users (desktop and laptops), installing and troubleshooting Windows operating systems, and macOS. The position will also provide assistance with technical analysis and feasibility studies of hardware and off-the-shelf applications. Specialist may be asked to safely operate a golf cart throughout campus, work in cramped or dusty environments, and climb on ladders. JOB DESCRIPTION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Provides first-level support to staff on all computer-related software and hardware issues by triaging email and phone calls for service requests.
  • Supports the functionality of university computers and peripherals through software installation and troubleshooting and repairing computer hardware.
  • Perform computer imaging, staging and installation.
  • Assist in the maintenance of IT standards and documentation.
  • Under the guidance of IT staff, inventories technology equipment and software.
  • Set up video conferencing sessions and other items.
  • Tracks and completes preventative maintenance and tests.
  • Provides testing and preventative maintenance services, tracks and documents the outcomes.
  • Contributes to team effort by completing other assignments and serving on project teams as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Technical Knowledge
  • Proficiency in basic computer hardware components and peripherals.
  • Understanding of common operating systems (Windows, macOS)
  • Familiarity with various software applications and functionalities.
  • Basic networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP)
  • Knowledge of mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) and their configurations.
Customer Service Skills:
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Active listening to understand and address user concerns effectively.
  • Ability to translate technical jargon into layman's terms.
Problem-Solving Abilities:
  • Analytical thinking to diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues effectively.
  • Ability to follow logical steps and methodologies for issue resolution.
  • Resourceful in finding solutions and workarounds for common problems.
Documentation and Ticketing:
  • Proficiency in using ticketing systems to log, track and escalate service requests.
  • Accurate documentation of troubleshooting steps and resolutions for future reference.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of user interactions and issue histories.

  • Professional demeanor and appearance in all user interactions.
  • Punctuality and reliability in adhering to work schedules.
  • Time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines effectively.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be currently enrolled or attending classes at Florida Polytechnic University.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must not be under current disciplinary probation, suspension, or expulsion.
  • Must have declared a degree program and majoring in either Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related major at a college or university.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.25 and have successfully completed 9 credits or more in the most recent fall or spring semester with a GPA of 2.0 or better.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • This position requires a criminal background check.
