Student Support Nurse JOB OVERVIEW: Under the general oversight of the Certified School Nurse(CSN), supports individual student with medical needs requiring one to one nursing support throughout the school day including transportation to and from school and summer programming. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess and identify health needs using currently accepted nursing science
- Administer medication and treatments including special health needs such as catheterization, tube feeding, and glucose monitoring in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of PA and district policies and procedures
- Schedule, perform and/or document physicals, special tests, examinations, mandated health screenings, and immunization programs and report significant finding to CSN
- Maintain comprehensive health records for each child, and accurately documents all immunizations, visits to the health room regarding illnesses, injuries, medication administration and treatments
- Accompany students on field trips to administer health services as needed
- Respond to and document emergency situations according to district guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned by the certified school nurse, building principal, and/or supervising administrator
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls
- Talk and hear, sit, stand for extended periods of time, walk, run, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl and crouch
- Possess close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
- Lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
Work primarily in office environment with low to moderate noise with occasional outside work including travel accompanying a student tfield rip Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, illnesses and injuries, nutrition, and related areas.
- Ability to diagnose and provide care for ill or injured students.
- Ability to convey appropriate medical information to school district staff or medical professionals to ensure a proper maintenance in the school setting.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed for position.
- Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, the Internet, Outlook, electronic mail).
- Ability to problem solve job-related issues.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and students with special needs.
- Ability to follow oral and written orders from supervisors, administrators, physicians, and to coordinate work with principal, teachers and others.
- Ability to describe orally and in writing school health services provided, issues and concerns regarding school health.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
Safety Requirements:
- Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
- Implements Board Policy regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and other Board policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students.
Travel Requirements:
- Travel between schools may be required.
License or Certificate:
- Professional nurse, designated as R.N. or L.P.N. as defined and determined by state law, and currently licensed in the state of Pensylvania.
- Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: PAESPA bargaining unit; 184 work days; 7.5 hours/day; $28/hr
