The student worker will conduct of moderate to advanced research in the fields of chemistry, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, or ecology. This position requires prior research experience and technical skills to be able to perform complex lab experiments independently. Additionally, the lab technician will take on a leadership role in the laboratory, training other students on the use of equipment and common laboratory practices.   • Assist faculty and researchers in planning and conducting research projects across various disciplines such as chemistry, microbiology, genetics, and ecology under the direction of the undergraduate research program director.
  • Manage fly husbandry, including maintaining fly stocks, collecting virgins, and setting up crosses.
  • Prepare and conduct experiments utilizing PCR and gel electrophoresis techniques.
  • Support research lab activities, particularly those related to Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE).
  • Perform laboratory and field experiments using standard and specialized scientific equipment such as Real-time PCR, SpectraMax, and NMR spectroscopy.
  • Aid in media preparation, data collection (including field data), sample logging, and testing.
  • Process, organize, and analyze data using spreadsheet or statistical software.
  • Prepare chemical reagents and biological media as needed for experiments.
  • Ensure laboratory safety protocols are followed, monitor equipment functionality, and maintain supplies and chemical inventory.
  • Train students in laboratory safety procedures and necessary technical skills.
  • Promote and enforce safe laboratory practices for both students and faculty members.
  • Maintain temperature logs for refrigerators and freezers, and handle lab supply shipments including recycling cardboard boxes.
  • Label and dispose of biological and chemical hazards in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Clean, wash, sterilize, and distribute laboratory glassware.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the lab workspace, including organizing shelves, drawers, and managing inventory of supplies and chemicals.
  • Manage supply inventory by conducting stock checks, placing orders, and verifying deliveries.
  • Ensure equipment cleanliness and adherence to manufacturer maintenance schedules.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at Nevada State in a related discipline.
  • 1 year research experience or a 5-10-week summer research experiences in a Lab setting (e.g., participation in INBRE iSURF, UROP, EPSCoR or NASA funded programs).
  • Required to have taken either BIOL 300L, BIOL 450L or currently enrolled in BIOL 300.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Work Hours:This position will work 5-15 hours per week.
