Personal references (friends, clergy, customers, relatives) are not considered acceptable references WORK SCHEDULE: 5 days a week; 37.5 hours per week; meetings as needed; travel to multiple campuses; night or weekend classes; alternative delivery of classes (e.g. web, web-hybrid, cohort, accelerated); no guarantee of summer sections JOB OBJECTIVE: To teach and develop Studio Art courses while furthering the goals of the program, department, school, college, and community college system. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 65% A. TEACHING: Develop and teach Studio Art courses to a diverse student population using both traditional and alternative delivery formats (hybrid, web, cohort, accelerated). Prepare course syllabi, course materials, evaluate student learning, and maintain class records. Primary courses will include Ceramics: Handbuilding, Ceramics: Throwing, and Drawing I. Additional courses may include Foundations II (3D Design), Life Sculpture, and Special Topics courses in Ceramics media. Willingness and potential to teach Art History Survey I and II both in the classroom and/or online preferred. 20% B. SERVICE/OUTREACH: Participate in program/curriculum development and assessment, student advising, department meetings, and college boards and committees. Contribute to the general oversight and maintenance of related equipment and facilities. Perform related duties as assigned. 15% C. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Participate in continuing professional development to improve teaching, evaluation of student learning and classroom technique. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Marginal tasks performed include the operation of standard office equipment such as computer and copy machines. JOB STANDARDS: A. Completed Master of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics, with at least 18 graduate hours in Ceramics specific coursework from a regionally accredited institution. B. Minimum one-year related teaching experience at the postsecondary level in 3D media (community college experience preferred). C. Understanding and acceptance of the comprehensive community college philosophy. D. Practicing professional in their field with credible exhibition experience. Maintains recognized professional artistic activity which may include scholarly research; participate in exhibitions and/or presentations of work; engage in field-specific activities. Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% of full-time experience. CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE:
- Experience teaching and/or ability to create curriculum and teach beginning and advanced ceramics courses (knowledge of both handbuilding and throwing)
- Experience teaching and/or ability to teach drawing and 3-D design with associated media
- Established pedagogy/philosophy in teaching both foundations level and advanced visual art courses
- Knowledge of historical/traditional and contemporary movements in visual art
- Experience maintaining physical oversight of the teaching classroom and kiln facility including but not limited to: materials organization, classroom storage and configuration for students and equipment, kiln loading and firing, glaze mixing and glaze and related ceramic materials coordination
- Ability to serve as the ceramics area leader responsible for training adjunct faculty, managing student workers and/or work study, coordinating supplies, and maintaining area facility and equipment
- Experience with electric kilns, non-traditional ceramic firing materials and kilns, slab roller, clay extruder, materials scales and large variety of hand tools specific to clay and ceramic teaching
- Experience in planning, installing, and marketing exhibitions desirable
- Experience with student advising and career mentoring experience desirable
- Experience teaching and/or ability to teach art history survey courses preferred
- Experience using multiple teaching formats, including web-based and traditional on-campus modalities preferred
- Experience teaching in a community college preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships JOB LOCATION: Candidates should be prepared to teach at any of the college's campuses, or online as needed. Travel between sites may be required. EQUIPMENT: Some use of telephone, computer equipment, overhead projector, fax machines and other standard office equipment is required. Facility with computer communication systems, learning management systems, and visual aid production a must.
