Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE: To maintain the physical upkeep and cleanliness of school buildings, grounds, and furnishings.Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Keeps interior and exterior of buildings clean including, sidewalks, driveways, play area, and grounds.
  • Daily
  • Clean entry glass
  • Clean litter around building and parking areas
  • Trash and recycle pick-up
  • Change kitchen and coffee station liners
  • Clean, disinfect restroom fixtures
  • Restock restroom supplies
  • Clean tables, counters, and sinks in break rooms
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains
  • Weekly
  • Low dusting below 5 feet
  • Monthly
  • High dusting above five feet
  • Annually
  • Clean ceiling vents
  • Clean and dust furniture
  • Clean window blinds
  • Clean fluorescent fixtures and diffusers
  • As Needed
  • Unplug drains
  • Deliver recycle and garbage barrels
  • Clean spills
  • Clean up any vandalism
  • Change trash liners
  • Shovels, and applies ice melt to walks and steps as needed.
  • Checks daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancy. Daily Unlock building
  • Assumes responsibility for pick up and delivery of both in and out of district mail.
  • Sweeps classroom daily and dusts and furniture.
  • Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects restroom and locker room floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily on a daily basis.
  • Cleans halls after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it.
  • Washes all windows on both inside and out at least once a year and more frequently if necessary.
  • Keeps the grounds free of rubbish and performs such other tasks that are necessary to maintain the school grounds in a clean and safe condition. Grounds are to be picked up weekly or more frequently if necessary.

  • Wet mop stairs

  • Extraction of all carpet areas
  • Wet scrub and wax floors

  • Makes minor building repairs.
  • As Needed
  • Reports needed repairs promptly to the Supervisor.
  • Reports immediately to the Supervisor any damage to school property or vandalism.
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his attendance required by the Supervisor.
  • Assumes the responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining before leaving that all doors and window are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reason, are turned off.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements for enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his duties.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  • Removes any signs of vandalism writing on walls, etc., as soon as it is discovered.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Maintenance.
  • Qualifications
  • Good physical condition.
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License
  • Ability to live and work in a cross-cultural, rural Alaskan environment.
  • Ability to carry out successfully the duties described below.
  • Ability to follow directions.

  • Requires decision-making ability and the ability to work independently. Requires ability to plan, schedule, and prioritize work.
  • Requires computer software proficiency including: Microsoft Office and email

  • Requires ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, Board of Education practices, Alaska State Laws, and Department of Education and Early Development regulations.
  • Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or GEDLanguage Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as software operating and training instructions, and technical procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before supervisors and district employees. Ability to speak Yupik preferred.Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as bank deposits and purchase requisitions.Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to develop effective working relationships with the principal, staff, students, parents, and community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
