Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) has an immediate opening for a Substation Technician Apprentice. The primary functions of this position will be to make installs, repairs, and maintain the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and related equipment, such as regulators, reclosers, breakers, etc.; repair electronic controls and electronic circuit boards to the component level. Assists in the testing of protective relaying equipment of the 230kV, 69kV and 12.47kV electrical systems. Assists in making modifications and necessary adjustments as requested. Assists in the installation, maintenance and testing of various special protection and relaying systems including low-side auto transfer schemes, transfer trip equipment, transmission system transfer schemes, etc. Assists with technical support regarding equipment and device operations including microprocessor controls, battery chargers, and line device recorder. Assists with the installation and maintenance of the Cooperative's microwave radio system, mobile radios and base station two-way radio equipment; performs frequency and modulation checks on the radio equipment and assures all systems are operating in accordance with FCC regulations; keeps records and maintenance schedule on related equipment. This position will also assist with the installation and maintenance of the Cooperative's communication systems, such as microwave, telemetry, fiber optic and IP network equipment, etc. Finally, this position will be responsible for assigned vehicle and/or test equipment to be kept clean and in good working condition; also responsible for inspections and mileage reports. This position pays $45.54/hr. Candidates are required to have a high school diploma or the equivalent is preferred, but not required.Candidates are required to have two years of work experience in repairing electronic equipment or installing computer networking equipment and have an operating knowledge of electronic and radio communication systems. Prior experience with substation relaying & protection and IP network programming is preferred.
