Substitute Teacher Job Description
Job Definition:A Substitute Teacher teaches and supervises students in the event that their regular teacher is unable to lead class. Their duties include managing classroom behavior, quickly interpreting lesson plans and creating reports to inform the students' permanent teacher of their success.
Job Requirements:
Experience: Minimum of Associate's degree from regionally accredited college/university
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* Proven experience working with students
* Effective communication skills; oral, written, and visual
* Understanding of basic principles of childhood development
* Comfortable interacting with children, guardians, and staff
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Provide a safe and consistent learning environment for all students
* Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
* Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
* Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student as directed by the teacher
* Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, and on the playground
* Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan
* For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher's past lesson plans
