JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT The primary purpose of the School Nurse is to meet the individual health needs of students; implementing emergency and individual health care plans as directed by physicians; maintaining compliance with all state laws relating to student health, maintaining compliance with the Washington state immunizations schedule; appropriately addressing health related needs of students whether they exhibit signs of illness, are medically gragile or injured; administering prescribed medications to students; effectively communicating with administrators, parents, staff and studetns dayly; appropriately reporting medical, physical, emotional neglect or abuse; serving as a health resource to all staff by identifying health problems or inuries that may require a referral to a physical for medical care. The School Nurse should communicate regularly and collaborate other duties with the Lead District Nurse. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Administers first aid, medication and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, district staff, and/or other agencies for the purpose of providing approptiate treatments, securing information and complying with legal requirements.
- Conducts programs (Vision and Hearing screenings, Sexual Health Education, CPR, etc.) for the purpose of complying with the law.
- Maintains and implements Emergency and Individual Health care plans as directed by physicians.
- Refgers students requiring further medical or mental health attention for needs such as medical or dental care, or mental health counseling, etc.
- Reports incidents to administration, CPS, or proper authorities for incidents such as bullying, intentinal injuries caused by another indivudual, suspected child abuse: physical, sexual or medical neglect, or suspected substance abuse to maintain student's personal safety, a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
- Reports contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law.
- Develops systems and prepares documentations for establishiung and maintaining up-to-date cumulative health records for all students consistent with school policies, adminstrative direction, and state and federal requirements.
- Maintains compliance with the Washington state law regarding immunization requirements.
- Prepares and submits, accurately and timely, school district, state and federal health-related reports.
- Advises on the modification of the education program by participating in staffings and IEP/504 meetings to meet the health needs of students.
- Acts as a resource person for school secretaries and/or office personnel who are responsible for administering emergency first-aid treatment.
- Provides delegation training for building personnel to administer medication.
- Participates in staffings for students as part of the building team.
- Collaborates with other District Nurses to provide wrap around services for students.
MENTAL DEMANDS Requires above average ability reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills; requires knowledge and understanding of laws and policies related to nursing in Washington State schools; requires ability to interpret and implement written instructions and accurately complete written reports, records, etc.; will experience frequent interruptions; requires adaptability and flexibility to work with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities and/or with a wide range of physical or emotional disabilities; requires patience and understanding when working under stressful situations and when working with students with special needs; may be required to calm distraught, angry or hostile students; requires cooperation and ability to work as a team member; requires efficient, adept organizational and time management skills. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Requires mobility (standing, walking, etc.); requires twisting upper torso and neck and slight bending forward without restrictions; occasional bending at waist to ground; requires good visual and hearing ability; exposure to infectious diseases carried by students; exposure to bodily fluids of any nature; exposure to student noise levels; may be required to lift and position students and assist with personal hygiene/toileting; may require prolonged standing; sitting, bending (stooping); may require restraining out of control students; may require assisting students with physical activities; requires mobility throughout district by motor vehicle. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRN qualifications - Valid Washington State license as a registered nurse (RN); BSN certification (or ability to obtain) and experience working in the school environment is highly desirable. Licenses/Special Requirement: Satisfactory background clearance results (fingerprint required); proof of ability to work in the United States; valid Washington State driver's license, current CPR & first aid cards and HIV/AIDS training.
