Substitute Positions(Including Instructional, Maintenance or Clerical positions)What is a Substitute?A substitute is: (i) one who is employed to substitute for a temporary period of time during the contracted employee's absence, OR (ii) one who is employed to fill an instructional vacancy for a period of time, not exceeding 90 days (unless otherwise approved by the Superintendent of Public Instruction on a case-by-case basis, during one school year), or (iii) one who is employed to provide instructional support to the classroom due to organizational needs.Instructional Substitutes (Substitute Teacher/Substitute Paraprofessional) InformationIn the Dinwiddie County Public Schools (DCPS) system, substitute teachers and paraprofessionals are an integral part of the instructional staff. The responsibility of an instructional substitute is to provide continuity to the educational program during the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The successful substitute teacher must sincerely like children and be patient, creative, and determined.Completion of our requirements does not guarantee being approved as a substitute. Those of competent and good moral character, holding a teaching license or with experience in teaching will be given preference. No contract or certificate shall be required for substitute teachers employed to substitute for a contracted teacher, regardless of the employment duration. Position SummaryUnder direction of the school principal, a substitute should plan and provide for appropriate environment for students. Provide an atmosphere and an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students and staff; interact with parents and community stakeholders as needed. Deliver instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.Non-instructional positions perform work assignments in the absence of the employee or as assigned. Qualifications, Education and Experience In order to be considered for employment as a substitute by Dinwiddie County Public Schools, candidates must:
Be at least 18 years of age. Drivers must be 21 years of age per DOT requirements and have a valid driver's license.Hold a high school diploma or have passed a high school equivalency examination approved by the Board of Education (required for instructional positions).Must be in good emotional and physical health and have no criminal record. Fingerprints and a background criminal record check will be required. Motor vehicle reports will also be requested if being considered for a driving positionA search of the registry of founded complaints of child abuse and neglect maintained by the Department of Social Services will be required.Instructional Substitutes Only: Must complete a substitute training course that is located on the Human Resources page of the division's website or click on the link below prior to beginning work. This requirement is waived if the applicant holds an active teaching license.Special RequirementsMust show professional courtesy and respect when communicating with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.Must be able to present a positive, professional image when working in the schools.Must be willing to perform work in person across the school division. Previous experience in the substitue area is preferred. Special Requirements for Instructional PositionsPrior teaching experience is preferred; otherwise, successful completion of a substitute training course or equivlent teaching certification is required for all new instructional substitutes.Must be able to implement teacher's plans in an orderly and disciplined atmosphere.Preference will be given to graduates of, or those currently enrolled in, accredited colleges or universities.
