General Definition of Work:In the absence of the school nurse, provide assistance to students and staff for routine and non-routine medical situations that are within standard licensing practices. Performs intermediate paraprofessional work ensuring the health of students in schools; does relatedwork as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:Providing nursing care to students; maintaining the school clinic; maintaining student and clinic records in the absence of the regular school nurse.(The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)* Performs health care services and assessments of students and staff sent to the clinic; keeps logs of visits and care given.* Makes observations and assesses condition; implements health care plan for each student examined; contacts and counsels with student, parents and/or teachers about problems observed, as needed.* Administers medications and first aid.* Performs specialized medical procedures in accordance with physician orders.* Performs related tasks as required.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Thorough knowledge of the common medical practices, procedures and techniques associated with a standard physical examination; thorough knowledge of the preliminary diagnosis of medical problems and the administration of medications related to treatment and first aid; thorough knowledge of health education principles, practices, and procedures; ability to administer medications and apply therapeutic treatments as required; ability to follow technical oral and written instructions in exact detail; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and associates.Education and Experience:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited school of nursing with some experience in community health, emergency or pediatric nursing.Physical Requirements:This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires standing, walking, and feeling; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, and hazards. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.Special Requirements:High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Must be First Aid/ CPR, AED certified and maintain current certifications. Must provide a copy of relevant Virginia licensure (LPN, RN, EMT, Paramedic). Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
